Just wondering if this is normal.

Background: I had just arrived home after work and was pulling up to the garage (inclined driveway). I was a little to far to the left so I let go of the gas and was coasting backwards for a bit (still in drive) to get a better alignment to go into the garage when the engine stalled out and gave me a bunch of warnings.

Is this normal? I've done this before on my Acura RDX and Mazda 3 with no issues, also have done it on the wife's Sonata. Seems unsafe for a vehicle totted for its off-road capability. What if I was driving up the side of a rocky hill, role back a little and then the vehicle cuts out on me.

Anyway here's a pic of the incline to give you an idea and the three warnings that flashes at me.

Read your manual! It says engine may stall if vehicle is allowed to coast backwards while in drive. Or start a thread claiming you have a major problem with your Tacoma, your choice.

rolling backwards in drive, or forward in reverse, isn't good for anybody.

Thanks swimmer, I've read the manual a few times, but didn't catch that one. Wasn't stating I had a huge problem, was just wondering if it was normal. And in my opinion stalling an engine if you coast backwards a bit is a big design flaw.

You weren't stating you had a big problem but someone posted about this in the past thinking they were having oil pressure problems.

True, unless you have a heart attack at an uphill stop light. Then I'm liking this design!

While I totally disagree with a engine stalling out if allowing it to roll backwards in D. I also do not agree with allowing the truck to roll backwards in D. It's just not a good idea. If you really want to "align" it better to allow for better parking, just toss the MF in neutral and let it do it's thing until you are satisfied with the distance created between you and the space you are attempting to park into.

True, a much better option in this scenario.

You don't think a manual wouldn't stall while in gear rolling backward without the clutch engaged?

If you can push in the clutch to roll backward, you can move the shifter with your hand into neutral or reverse to go backward right?

I wouldn't throw it into reverse while rolling backwards unless you want to feel and hear a horrible grinding sound until the transmission finally decides to let it into gear.

Never had an automatic vehicle stall upon rolling backward. My 06 SR5 v6 auto didn't stall at all in 10 years and 250,000km.

Do the 3rd gens have hill start assist? I live on a steep hill and roll back while in drive quite often. The hill start assist kicks right on, and the truck doesn't even come close to stalling.

That's what made it so weird for me, none of my other vehicles have ever stalled. Figured it was the equivalent of the autos clutch being pushed in when you're stopped or lightly pushing on the brakes.

It does, but it only engaged in certain conditions, not when you've been in drive for a while, usually when you go from park into something else.
