2nd gen here, but mine will do it in extreme conditions. You wonder why i would do it. I plow up a steep drive, and one time i just thought i would coast backwards rather than kick it in reverse. Well, it didnt like it. Stalled, lights on the dash etc. I have to pick up a little speed but yes it stalls. No problem for me on normal driving conditions, not a concern for me.

Right, 5 feet is a long way to roll backwards (when you intend to be moving forward). Add extra tow weight to the equation, it wouldn't be hard at all to roll back on a tailgater. It only took one time spinning tires at the boat ramp before I started 2 footing nearly every stopped incline.

Why aren't people just using the left foot brake method?

Everytime I have to drive an auto it's what I have always done. Gives you the best control in an auto.

I don’t use it because if you end up giving it gas and rolling with the brake not fully disengaged it can result in an intentional stall (doesn’t shut off totally) and a warning. This is due to the software preventing “un-commanded acceleration” events some vehicles experienced years ago. Happened to me twice and I never left foot brake these days, it’s one or the other.

Well that sucks. Thankfully I haven't had that happen in the autos I've driven.

I was stopped on a decent incline in my 3rd gen OR auto. Let off the brake and started to go back a bit when the crawling started and sounded like the tranny was being shredded...:annoyed:. Guess it was working just as it should. Was kind of scary before I figured out what it was. I thought I'd need a new engine from the wild noise it made. However, all is good!

my 20 engages the abs and stops you from rolling back but it feels like the truck is severely maulfunctioning. Is that what your feeling? Or does it actually stall and turn off the engine? If it turns off the engine something is wrong. Search "hill assist"

This is what was going through my mind as well. Just like in my industry, if only folks read their owner's manual lots of "issues" could be entirely avoided. Oh well.

Yep, but for some commonsense is in short supply.

My 2020 sr5 does the same if on a steep hill, but it'll never stall. Another pro tip...step on the gas slightly so the vehicle just begin to creep so it won't go backwards.

I dug up this old thread today after searching for this exact issue. I had it happen to me today while out on the trails.

I was trying to untangle my dog’s leash and the truck rolled back maybe 10 feet while in drive. It was a remote area and no other people around or else I would have obviously had my foot on the break.

My truck stalled, engine shut off and electrical system stayed on. The dash gave me the same three warning messages the OP listed. I put it into park, I turned the ignition off and on again and all was fine.
