You might be having some issues with the transmission spline, the motor and tranny will need to horizontally seperate before being picked up vertically.

...........Or pulling the tranny out too. It's a bitch to get them seperated. When I did the clutch on my 98, I had to pry the tranny from the motor.

Hitch and wiring, aux back-up light, rear strobe lights, radio and underseat sub.
The locating pins like to hold on for dear life. PB Blaster and a prybar. Tapping on the case with a deadblow hammer will help it separate. Don't wail, and don't use a regular hammer.
The input shaft might be seized on the pilot bearing. It's going to take some wiggling to work it free.
Patience and persistance are the keys.

They'll definitely separate... it's the going back together thing that might be difficult using my method

Thanks for all the ideas everyone. I did take the starter out. I didn't have any time to work on it today :-( but tomorrow is another day. I was wondering if i would benefit by taking the motor mounts off the engine block.
