    Hi fellas,

Just wondering if it's possible to swap a 2015 4.0 automatic in to a 2005 4.0 automatic. Both are 4x4 and dclb. Same engines but what's it like under the hood? I'd take the trans tcase, ecu wiring harness from the 2015 as well. Anything else?

Thanks for the advice in advance and happy holidays.

Youll have to swap your headers on the new motor or add the secondary air injection

From what @gearcruncher has said, the trans will be different internally.

I would think you would definitely need the ECU from the '15. The '12+ has a different emissions control system with the air injection pump

I'll add.....the valves should already be in the right side exhaust manifold if it's a complete engine. However, you'll need to source the actual pump. Stay away from an ECU from a '12. It won't have the after shut down purge programming that the '13+ have

It would be much easier to swap the exhaust header to the earlier one than to add the air pump, associated wiring, ECU, and then hope it's all happy with the existing wiring and electronics.

Thanks for the info so far!

I can take basically anything from the 2015 if needed. Would that make the swap more likely to work? Or would this project be a big pain in the ass?

Adding a smog pump to a 2005 would be like adding catylitic converters to a '70 Chevelle, 454, 4 speed car. All you need to do is remove the air pump switching valves and right header off the '15 engine and install the '05 right header. You probably need to swap over the '05 engine wiring harness. If you're concerned about cosmetics, you can swap the right valve cover. Several people have done the swap, and I seriously doubt anyone has installed the air pump.

Besides ALL that, if you install the '15 ECU, it's not going to play nice with the '05 transmission. And if you use the '15 trans and ECU, it's not going to be happy unless you install all the air pump stuff.

Ditched the project entirely. Sounded like a pain in the balls. Haha

After reading all the transmission and SAI headaches probably not. Having a hard time finding a junkyard low mileage 2011 engine. Will probably go with rebuilt.

Not sure how people are having transmission issues. That doesn't make sense.

It is just swapping the components between the two engines. Then good to go.

Pulled valve covers and swap on new engine. Pull headers and swap on new engine. Then new engine no longer has the '12+ SAIS stuff and plugs right up to the '09.

@mightytacoman just recently bought a used engine with great mileage. Maybe he can chime in where he got his?

Well I shopped around for a month or more using several different methods. Car-part being a major one and eBay actually. Searching on eBay requires several searches such as "1gr-fe" and "1grfe".. On car part, you need to change years your searching for by 2012+ or 05-11 and xrunner vs non xrunner.
I eventually found this one on eBay. 2015 with 26000 miles on it for around $2500. Plus it comes with a bunch of extras such as the throttle body that I can turn around and sell to recoup some of the cost.

you can't use the 2015 ECU as the body harness would not plug into the ECU. Best bet is use the 2005 harness, ecu, headers, and valve covers on the 2015 engine.

Which exhaust manifold gaskets did you go with? 2005-2011 or 2012+. Got a lightly used 2014 engine last week for the swap.
