These numbers are crank numbers not rear wheel horse power or toque numbers?
Wouldn’t it just be easier to put in a 3.4 with a supercharger.?

Yeah but it won’t be a Diesel engine. The whole appeal is the whole Diesel aspect.

Well the 3.4 will run just as far as a diesel with an easier swap.
As you said I guess its a diesel thing, :)

This is true but I pulled my 3.4 out to do a Diesel. As I said I wanted the torque. When a turned up 3.4 can produce 400+ ftlbs of torque I’ll go 3.4.
I help a coworker put a 4bt in his ranger on 35’s which he uses for a daily and hunting and farm stuff and gets about 35mpg. Idk if a gaser can pull that off and last.

Power wise, the 4BT has 265 lb/ft of torque at 1600 RPM while the 5VZ only has 220 lb/ft of torque at 3600 RPM. Big difference.

Ok I definitely understand the mpg,

“Big difference” not at all, quite the opposite. The supercharged motor with a few mods puts out probably 300 hp and 315lb/ft torque compared to the 4BT at 265 lb/ft and the supercharger
moves the torque power down to the lower 2000rpms. But I get what your saying.
My REAR WHEEL torque is 270lb/ft while the 4BT is only 265 lb/ft at crank and if you figure
15 percent loss maybe more? (as these are older transmission design) in the transmission and gears this number goes down to REAR WHEEL at 230 lb/ft give or take for the diesel and the REAR WHEEL supercharged 3.4 is at 270 lb/ft

Rear wheel torque at 2000 rpms is 260 that goes up a bit more to 270 and that’s a daily driver

AND NO the 3.4 supercharged will not go to 400

Just have to say you’ve proved that with proper care you can make a Tacoma perform amazingly and last an insane amount of time.
The Diesel swap thing is really just a wow factor thing I think because in almost every way it’s really impractical.
Even my truck is impractical in every way. Even though I’m building it to go anywhere it’s still Heavy, huge, probably slow and loud...

    OME and worth every penny.
When i first bought mine second hand back in '06 or so, i seriously considered going to DieselToys in Houston for a Toyo. engine swap.
I was informed and surprised at the 10K price tag. When asked what the deal was they told me to make it work simply they were importing front 1/2's from Brazil for all the needed parts. Since it was only for the mileage factor, I blew it off. Also worried Texas may go statewide on emissions before it ever payed for itself. I don't regret it either way, it would have been nice but damn.

The 1KD-FTV is the best diesel for the job. If they ever released a diesel option over there this is what you'd all have under your bonnets (hoods) already.
A conversion package removed from an Aussie vehicle will set you back between 8-10K AUD plus shipping.

Any diesel will fit if you're willing to put in the work.

That said, I'd got with the 4bt. They're pretty common so they're not hard to come by and because of that the aftermarket is fairly broad.

That new create motor from Cummins looks fairly promising as well.

There's a reason why people go the turbo diesel route, its just not for everybody because not everybody see's it that way.
