Engine swaps are well known, but what about transmission swaps?

Kind of a weird question, but I was thinking about how the automatic transmission on the double cabs really does the truck a disservice.

anyone know of any successful transmission swaps that didn’t also involve an engine swap? If so, which transmission models?

Like an auto to manual trans swap? Several on here have done it. Usually when they are converting a Prerunner to 4wd so they swap the trans too for the one they want.

I haven't heard of anyone swapping out the auto for a different auto though unless it's just to replace a bad one with a good one of the same variety.

Yeah.. I was thinking of a swap from an automatic to another automatic. Was wondering if it would be do-able

I don't know of any other auto trans that will bolt up to the 3.4l at least not without fabrication or some kind of adapter

If you do an engine swap too then you have those trans options

True. Would be a cool thing to have. I wouldn't mind using an adapter so long as the price of the project is somewhat reasonable (like the price of doing an engine swap)

I'm not sure what the advantage of an auto to another auto would be. At least in a cost-benefit frame of mind... The autos really aren't that bad.

In fact, the 340's are pretty damn solid transmissions.

I have a doublecab with the auto, and really the only transmission I'd consider swapping is a 5 speed. I thought it might be cool to have the same transmission as what's in my 5th gen 4runner, as it's one of those auto-manuals, but *IF* I were to do that, I'd swap in the 4.0L as well, and bring all the ECU etc... along with it.

But again, it comes down to cost-benefit... A LOT of cost, for not really all that much benefit besides being a cool engineering problem to tackle.

Good points and gives me another perspective on the idea. Thanks! If I win the lottery one of these days, I'll do a build thread on this lol

The issue with using a different automatic most times is that it is computer controlled, and these days often controlled by the same ECU as the engine. Doing an automatic to manual swap will often times be much easier than doing automatic to automatic, unless you use a separate automatic transmission control unit.

Long story short, yeah it's possible, but a lot of effort for not a huge change in drivability I'd say.

It all depends on your budget but there's many companies that have adapters and flexplates available for a multitude of transmissions

As for the A340 transmission that's in our trucks if built correctly these trans will support well over 1k hp and 20lbs of boost . The A340 is a very sought after set up for turbo'd 2JZ drag racing set up

    I've seen fully built drag racing Powerglides behind 3RZ's , 2JZ's even 3.4 V6's

Just look at the build thread
Have you tried the TransGo Shift Kit? It's a cheap option with a fairly easy install that really improved the feel (and MPG!) of my 03 Xtra Cab.
