Looking at buying 2016 Tacoma with 59,000 miles. Carfax shows “engine timing / front cover replaced” by local dealer shortly after vehicle was acquired at auction. I have read about what this repair involved. Truck price is good but only a little less than comps in the area. Should this completed repair make me not want to buy this Tacoma?

My 09 had a leaking timing cover when I bought it at 45xxx miles. They fixed it under warranty. No leaks or issues since. 116xxx miles now. I suspect what they actually did on the one you're looking at was change the timing cover gasket, not the cover itself.

I wouldn't worry about that. Just make sure there's no sign of leaks now.

A leaking timing cover does not indicate a defective engine or abuse of the engine. Of the gaskets that could fail, it is the least problem as it just lets a drip of oil out of the engine, and does not involve mixing coolant and oil or vice-versa.

If the leak is fixed I wouldn’t worry about it at all.
