I hear ya. The latter tends to be my approach. The seedling idea behind this entire post is based on my observation that, on more than one occasion, I've been attached to the idea of "rebuild/repair" to a fault. Not with vehicles, because I've not been as attached to any other vehicle as I am the Taco. Other things, though...I've seen myself spend myself silly and go prematurely gray over wrestling with trying to not replace something. I don't think I would fall in love with a 3rd gen, anyway...not to mention, I can do a ton to my truck and still have spent less than a downpayment on a new Taco.

My engine died at 225K, and I'm actively hunting down a used low mile engine for it. I will replace the timing belt, oil pump and screen on the replacement engine before its installed regardless of the mileage. So my answer to the original question is to rebuild/replace rather buying another truck. Fortunately I have another vehicle to drive while I'm getting my truck straightened out. After my Tacoma is fixed, I don't plan on it being my daily driver. It will live the easy life for as long as my beater lasts. My plan is to lift it, wheels and tires, new headlights, tail lights (maybe), upgrade stereo and speakers, and maybe even some interior upgrades or performance upgrades. Point being, I really enjoyed my Taco and I'd much rather spend money repairing and modding it verses starting over with another loan and monster truck payment.:thumbsup:

I tried to get my Clark’s re-soled. Fat chance! Was more expensive than new ones. We’re a throw away society.

Maybe I can still become a millionaire?

Edit: I kinda want my engine to die so the manager will let me buy a donor V8 4Runner but the Taco will be kept. That’s for sure

I got my Red Wing boots re-soled. Was less than 1/2 cost of new boots.

Apples and oranges. Redwings are much more expensive than Clark’s. Redwings are also made to be utilitarian; I would stay away from any pair of “work boots” that couldn’t be resoled, where as most casual shoes either can’t be resoled or cost as much as a new pair.

I have 194K on my 2005, S/C'd since 55K, pushing over 400HP since 170K and all seems good. But the truck being a work truck with a pop up camper on it full time and weighing in at a portly 6,200 pounds ought to have the transmission either replaced or re-built fairly soon. Given how hard this thing works, I am contemplating having a brand new one put in, dealer seems to charge about $3,200 for the assembly on average, I have found zip for low miles, all over 100K miles for the 6 MT.

But yeah, considering how much coin I have in it and how much new ones cost, even putting $10K into it would be far better than starting all over again.
