You're right, I wrote timing chain but my brain was thinking timing belt. The timing chains start to make a racket when they begin to stretch enough to start clattering on the cover. You'd know if it was on its way out.

Did you undo any grounds on the engine block at all?

It's a 4 cylinder so no timing belt. Regardless, belt or chain driven if you crank and engine without something turning the camshaft it makes a very different sound than with one. The shop I used to work in would see different makes and models come in with broken timing belts and you could tell from across the parking lot if someone tried to start it.

I think his problem is going to be ignition or fuel related. Keep in mind that a spark issue could appear to be a fuel problem because of the way the two systems interconnect i.e. if you don't get the spark confirmation coming back to the ECM, it won't energize the fuel injectors.

A buddy's neon did the same thing, we narrowed it down to a faulty crank position sensor and can sensor, replaced them both and started right up. They determined the timing and firing order, but null and void if you are getting spark. But, on his neon, he had no codes or CEL, so definetly could be a sensor somewhere

I am having the same issue. I think it narrows down to Crank sensor, I just changed my cam sensor with an oem part. My cranks but it doesn't start. I disconnected the fuel line and turned the starter, no fuel pressure. So I willing to bet that the crank sensor was on its way out and now it went out. Since its shorting or not working, the circuit opening relay stops my fuel pump from working. I will OBD II it this saturday and confirm. Also, I am running it supercharged with a 7th injector kit. The darn thing probably got overwhelmed with the URD PCM unit and shorted out. Hopefully a new one will last a long time.

You double checked your fuses, right? I've seen fuses that hadn't blown but the contact points for some reason weren't providing contact, even though they looked perfect. I've had the no start and everything checked out fine deal happen on an 80 series Land Cruiser and on a 100 series Cruiser. On both of them it ended up being the connection between the under hood fuse box and the wiring harness. The under hood fuse panel connects to the harness with a spade connector, or vice versa. I ended up bending the receiving end the spade connection inward to close the gap so the spade made better contact. The first time it happened it was an absolute pain in the ass to troubleshoot. Once I tightened the clips up and got it back together it fired right up. I had never even heard of this happening either. Somebody has to be the first, I guess. Just sucks when it's you.

Did anyone in this thread ever figure out what was causing this? I'm having exactly the same issue.

My 1996 Tacoma has the same issue. It's towed to 2 repair shops, all failed to get it fixed. Has anyone in this thread figured this out?

Check the idle air control valve. It often gets gunked up and prevents enough air to bypass the throttle body on startup.

Disconnect battery and touch the tow connector cables together. Reset ecu. My tacoma would not start after a repair and took it to a shop. Thats whay they did. Wouldn't start again a month later. I did the same thing and after startung and gassing it cranked right up. It could be a symptom of a bigger problem but its worth a shot.
