engine warm up is always like an OCD. i dont think anyone really knows the answer. i personally let her warm up about 2 minutes and then drive like an old lady until engine gets to running temp. its kind of like the old belief to change your oil every 3000. with synthetic and these new engines i have been changing my oil at around 5000 miles, no issues and my cars are just fine. these midas's and meinekes just want your money.

I have an auto starter. I walk into the garage, open the door and turn her on. It takes me a couple of minutes to get my younger son in the car, and get settled to leave. I granny it for a few minutes than drive normal.

At nights, I turn on the car as I start walking towards it. Takes me about 2-3 minutes to reach it. I just get in and take off after that.

They recommend nowadays to only idle your vehicle for approximately 1-2 minutes before driving. I am very used to driving my tacoma in cold temperatures, this morning it was -45C well...-45 F, i guess at that temp they are the same, with -62C wind chill this morning and if I took off after 1 minute, I would not have moved very far. Your trck should also be able to idle for 10 minutes without causing damages, the recommendations are based on emission concerns, warm your truck up for at least 5 minutes if you are below 0F as a general rule of thumb.

Well I went to start my truck up today at noon, just to warm it up a bit, as it is -48 with windchill. Yes, I said -48. It took a couple seconds longer than usual to start it up, and about 10 minutes before the temp needle even moved.

-45!!! Thats a lot more extreme than what most of our trucks will ever suffer as cold start conditions.

My average winter morning temp is 20 to 25F. I start the truck, put on the seatbelt and back out of the garage. It's an easy half mile and the temp needle is moving by the time I get to the highway. On the rare single digit mornings I wait a minute or so before moving.
