i need some opinions on my 08 tacoma with a 2.7 engine, i bought the truck form a local beer distributor with 300,000 miles and non running. the engine was still in the truck but had partially been disassembled so it did not run. [yes, the price was very cheap] i rebuilt the engine with just about everything new or rebuilt. put in a new clutch. pressure plate and new throw out bearing. now the issue. the motor runs fine. does not overheat and has no issues what so ever except it has a high pitch whine the goes up and down with the rpm's. it whines at all times when the engine is running and does not go away when pressing the clutch in. i went thru the forums and after reading the problems with the bearings in the transmission thought it might be one of the transmission bearings. so i pulled the transmission and rebuilt it with all new bearings. when tearing it apart everything looked fine. i installed the transmission and the whine is still there. i have left the accessary belt off and the whine does not go away. it's puzzling to me because i have put about 500 miles on the engine with no issues. it just has the high pitched sound. almost like it has a blower sitting on top. i am about to pull the motor and take it back apart to see if i can find the problem. looking for ideas. can the trust washers be installed incorrectly? can it be a cam or valve train problems? any ideas appreciated. thanks

Timing chain guides can wear and cause this. Same with idler gears, but its more common on the V6.

I would say focus on isolating the origin of the noise with more accuracy before you tear apart.

See if removing the oil cap lets you listen into the valve train.

Wow, it has to be a major disappointment after all that work. I wish I had something to offer.

Have you used the mechanics Stethoscope to attempt to at least isolate it to one area?

i used the old school long 3/8 inch extension to listen. its hard to pinpoint a exact area. no metal in the oil either.

I’m with the other 2 guy, I’d see if I could narrow down the noise location.
Mostly, I am just here to tell you “Sorry man”
I know the feeling of doing everything right with new parts, only to have things go wrong in the end.
If you ever get it figured out, let us know.

I have the same issue with my 2010 I-4 MT-5 with 180K miles. I had no issues, then after work last Thursday I cranked up and it sounds like low power steering fluid. Nope, it's full.

I took it to a mechanic who says it's not the PS pump or the pulleys. He said the whine is coming from the oil pan. He checked with his engine builder who told him that there's a balancer mechanism on the crankshaft, and that is likely the problem. I'm not sure what to do about it.

There are actually two balance shafts in the 2TR-FE Engine. I have never heard one whine before however.

The mechanic recommend that I take it to the dealer. I'm going to do that ASAP. Will report back when I know more.

    Dealer! :spending:

Seems odd that a mechanic would recommend the dealer.... o_O

Good I'd love to hear what would cause a balance shaft to whine as it is just a weighted shaft. Now if he said it was the gears and chain for the shafts it would make more sense...

I wish you luck and hope it is something minor.

I got a call today, and the service dept's opinion is that it's the gears and chain. I should know more tomorrow.

My dealer is top notch, and the service department is the best! That's why I've been with them going on 15 years. The mechanic knew that he was out of his depth, and his advice was sound. The only reason I didn't take it to the dealer in the first place was they had a 10 day back-log, and I figured it was something minor (like the PS pump).

I just got the truck back. The service dept checked the chain and gears, and said it was the clutch. $900.00 later I have the truck, and the clutch feels great, but the engine still whines. I'm not sure what to do.

If the sound didn’t change, I’d be looking at the reason they recommended a clutch replacement.
I’m not saying the clutch didn’t have a problem.
If the clutch is what they claimed was the cause of the initial Noise complaint, I’d be kind of “upset”.

I'm trying not to think about it right now. I'll give the service mgr a call tomorrow.

When I picked the truck up I thought I could still hear it. It wasn't until I pulled in the garage that I realized it hasn't changed a bit.
