I think one thing the local dealer is welding the cat on. Not sure If this is a preventive measure. Sounds like a good idea.

That sucks they had time to do that.

They steal them from parking lots when you're not around and they don't usually unbolt them, they use a sawzall and are gone in less than a coupla minutes. Welding won't matter except inconveniencing you when working on your exhaust for whatever reason and unless you have your dog with you everywhere you go then that won't matter either.

Skids plates may help to slow them down as, depending on the fit, it makes it difficult to get the tools in there to cut or unbolt the cats.

That's it, the "Cat Clamp". Friggin $300 for a sandwich-plate style clamp and wrap-around cables to anchor it to the frame. I think this company knows that while their price is expensive, it's still cheaper than a replacement cat. But still, all it does is slow them down. They can hacksaw through the cables then the exhaust pipe. To really prevent them from stealing it, maybe something like some hardened steel rods connected to the frame surrounding the cat, kinda like a steel cage. IDK, just thinking out loud

Maybe I am just a pessimist, but it seems to me that any scrap yard that is going to buy a bunch of cats from a guy who "just happened to have em lying around" isn't going to be too worried about checking them for engravings....

haven't had my cat stolen but I've had to replace them before. Got $45 for a cat off a 97 dodge ram and when I turned it in they asked where I got it and took my license and thumbprint.

I can see that with a VIN on the cat it could be documented who brought in what cat. They have all my information but I'm not sure they document what cat I brought in, with the vin on the cat and on the slip with my thumb would help the investigation of a cat theft and give you the thief pretty easily.

Wow... here you pitch it in a barrel for weight, then they pay you. Mostly the people stealing them will have them in a pile of metal where you wouldn't see them, they weigh the truck/trailer, then you dump it, then they pay you for the scrap metal based on weight. Nobody is going to dig for it. As for car junk yards in this area, they don't accept cats without the whole car.

I can't believe someone would toss one into scrap iron for weight, @ $160/ ton when the scrap yard will pay $40-$150 each for the platinum. I heard there is upto a gram in some at $1800/ oz. my2¢
