This whole thread is full of communist anti tacoma world users. Where is all the venom? Maybe the Tacoma transmission is great after all!

I notice that you have a MT. Me too (18 Pro MT) and works fine on and off road. It's the 6th Toyota truck I've owned, and the best yet.

Love all the math, science n stuff.

I was right with you until this -

To each their own, but it's not really credible making statements about OVtune as fact along with the rest of the well written facts and figures you gave. If you put an "IMO" in there, well that's fair ball I guess. More to the point, why mention the tune at all? I mean, you did that for a reason. I think you know that anyone reading this has also seen the OVtune threads on here and perhaps discussions on social media.

To the many that are cracking their knuckles and about to keyboard warrior me to death with accolades for the 3rd gen, don't bother. I like my truck, I enjoy driving it every day. I chose to put money into it to make it better - for me. You like yours, that's great and I believe you. I'm also not defending Mat or his product, it speaks for itself. Check out the review thread.

I had no problem with speeds below 60. The place I disliked the tranmission was above 60 mph. It’s just fucking annoying. Got an equation for that?

The GM twins peak HP is at 6800 RPM, same as redline for those still saying peak power comes on too late and too high with the 3.5.

Hell, the 2GR-FKS in other current platforms gets "better" HP ratings.. but look at the RPM these numbers are "achieved" at. Kind of a shell game IMO.

I was gonna say that clearly GM has the 3.6 turned up to acheive the numbers it does, while Toyota doesn't. Clearly seen by the examples you mentioned.

I respect this. I’m tired of all the “there’s something wrong with my truck” guys. You said you choose to make it better - for you. Perfect. I don’t think Toyota screwed up and made a mistake with the Trans. Accept it or choose to change it, like you. Don’t just whine about it and expect Toyota to “fix” it.

Great post. Couple of thoughts about the 3.5L and 6speed auto.
The intake noise is loud, makes it seem like you are revving the motor up when only turning 3k rpms.
ECT mode should be standard and when in ideal conditions have an ECO button. This is how my wife’s 2012 CRV was, you could select ECO when on nice flat land to gain a little more MPGs.
The gearing is very tall, at 80mph the truck is only turning 2k rpm. My wife’s 18 Subaru Outback is at about 2700-2800rpm at 80mph. I also know my 2nd Gens were also well over 2k rpm at 80mph.

TBH I'm very picky about throttle response and any weirdness in that area (excessive lag and inconsistency drives me nuts). I have a manual, so I guess that's to be expected to a certain degree. I don't expect cable like response, that's just not ever going to happen.

AS far as bitching and whining, i agree except - take complaints up with Toyota, customer feedback has already lead to more than a few beneficial TSBs.
Full disclosure, one of those TSBs resulted in a new OEM calibration for manual trans trucks that fixed almost all of my original complaints. If the truck had shipped that way, I wouldn't know a thing about OVtune. I bought into it for driveability, not for extra power... buuuuut the torque bump would be hard to part with now lol.

The issue with the TSB, is the dealers.

    Some won't even acknowledge them.

I'm looking for a new dealer myself. At least until it's out of warranty.

I can't believe Toyota put a minivan engine into a truck in combination with this stupid 6 speed transmission that changes gears all the time.

I can't wait to buy a Ford Ranger that has a Focus engine in combination with a 10 speed transmission.

I feel your pain brother. I tried to have the diff whine dealt with via TSB.

I suspected I wouldn't get anywhere with the calibration update at the dealer either, and since I already have Techstream/OBD cable I just did it myself (there's a whole thread on that topic lol).

I agree with OP for the most part! The truck does have planty of HP and torque! Need high RPM's that's fine but I think the main problem is the transition between gears to be exact between the 4th and 5th gears! Using cruise control going 70mph going over a small overlay the truck will drop to the 4th gear at high RPM's and jerk you around. I think it should hold 5th to achieve a bit higher RPM's for a smoother transition to 4th.

Wow, that is pretty much what a stock M/T is turning at 60 in 6th! At 70, I'm at 2500 and starting to growl... it's pretty good in that range.
