enough thread?

So got some napa lug nuts for my stock wheels...

They had too options...shorter shank and longer shanks...

Should I have got longer. This is a lugnut with the washer..all the way agains the wheels.

 

Get longer shank.

Not for use on OE wheels.

 

Toyota tend to use flat seat lug nut. Make sure you buy the correct of lug nut type.

Majority of the folks that work at the local auto parts store are not that knowledgeable.

 

Whoops forgot to mention. Yeah I have aftermarket wheels. Dont buy those unless you have tapered lug seat. But you get the idea about how the shank extends into the lug hole.

 

Yeah these I got actually have the flat seat and washer..there just the cheaper ones and the washer is not "built" into the lug you just put the flat washer on with the lug.

They just offered to different lenghts and this was the shorter.

I use short shank Lug nuts on all My Toyota Aluminum 15" wheels.

On some wheels the long shank Mag style lug nuts will bottom out on the brake drum and the wheel will still move so be careful .

 

Funny you mention that, when I was a teenager I had a car with mag wheels and I had a hard time keeping the wheels tight. Once the wheel came off, lucky I did not injure anyone. Problem was exactly what you described, in fact I thought that type was obsolete because of this issue.

Now whenever I put any wheels on a vehicle, I use a torque wrench and double check all of the nuts (all my vehicles have the acorn style).

 

I both to see how much the difference is...I guess it would depend on how much of the thread is past the surface of the wheel.

How much usuable thread there is.

 

It is simple to see if the lug nut shank with the washer is to long it extends past the wheel it is to long .

I would need to look to see how far the stud extends into the wheel when the wheel is on correct.

Also check that the lug nut does not bottom out on the stud before the wheel is tight.

Older trucks have studs replaced who knows if they are the same length as original .
