So having digested a few threads on here, looks like it's possible to use the entune premium head unit on lower trims (with some bezel replacements, possibly the shark fin antenna as well)...

My question is this: how does one source the premium head unit? Will a dealer order it? I'd have to believe if they will it's cheaper than the infotainment.com unit...

I originally upgraded my stock radio with a used Tacoma HD unit for $410. Doing a search, new is $2300 (discount price!). After I figured out the antenna included with this radio was the one I needed for navigation, I replaced this radio with a used 2015 Tacoma hd + navigation + xm for $790. I could not find a new price online, maybe $4000? If I wanted to listen to xm, I would have to add the shark fin antenna, which is beyond my abilities, so I would have to pay the dealership to install and paint it.

As you can see, buying new factory radios is not a viable option. If you do go used, the JBL and non-JBL radios are not interchangeable.

I suggest you look for an aftermarket radio, I think you would a much higher quality unit with more power for a lot less money.

You have the same base radio he is speaking of. Wrong. Just all wrong.

I'm not sure which base radio the OP is talking about. The base radio in the SR has neither HD nor XM, so the radio above would be an upgrade at a good price, as long as you do not want factory navigation.

Not necessarily true. Depends what OP has. Sounds like he has SR.

SR's have "Entune Audio". No XM, no connected navigation.

SR5s have "Entune Plus". XM radio, HD Radio, Connected Navigation

Sports/Off Roads have "Entune Premium" Integrated Nav, bigger touchscreen, etc

Some other package gives JBL but not sure what they call that

@Pine State is correct, i am inquiring about swapping out my future SR's 'Entune Audio' head unit for an 'Entune Premium' head unit. The premium head unit is on TRD trims and above or SR5s with the Sonar/Nav package.

What I find shocking is that an SR5 Sonar/Nav pkg costs under a grand, so more than 3-4 times that for the head unit/antenna seems unreasonably overpriced...

A back step for when I get older, Carhartt seatcovers, 4Runner wheels, Topper, and "tats all folks"! --for now!!
Exactly correct --they (Toyota) are trying to entice you into in moving "up" (= spend more money) to the higher trim levels. Resist if you can and maybe get lucky, like I did and find a nice used premium OEM radio/headunit from a nice owner (RNocera) here who sold me his when he upgraded to a aftermarket unit. Then I sold my OEM to another good person from Hawaii.
    Good luck to you

So I emailed a couple dealers asking about their ability to source parts and/or perform install. After showing them the infotainment.com link for the Factory Reconditioned OEM Head Unit and got the following responses:

I find the first quote suspect - since several reports from members here have swapped out the premium head unit and I don't recall seeing anyone cite rewiring or harnesses... The second one might have some merit in the 2018 model as different from previous years because of the TSS suite... Anyone have knowledge about this?

How do you know what trim he has? I don't see any info in his profile.

Don't have one yet, going for SR trim possibly this weekend, but my question was generally about 'lower trims' than the premium head unit is available on - SR for sure, SR5 when not equipped with sonar and nav pkg
