I’m also looking into replacing my Entune audio plus with the premium or JBL version. I have to keep it pretty much stock as my truck is leased and want to keep it that way so there’s not any problems. So if I have the dealer do it, how many kids do I have to sacrifice?

Depends on the "quality" of the kids!
No seriously --you better be ready to open up your wallet VERY WIDE as a lot of green will fly out.
The price the dealers want to charge for these head units will floor you, to say nothing of "them" doing it for you. I checked out the prices from the dealer wanted for just the unit , and I was shocked -- over $1200; for the premium -- not the jbl. Oh and don't forget you will need a new dash surround part. I bit the bullet on the surround and bought it from a dealer in another state for around $200. Then I sold the radio and the surround I took out - so that eased the pain somewhat!

Probably don’t want to mess with the JBL as they are significantly different. Just go with the standard premium.

Thanks guys! I might go with the premium and surround and do it my self. I’m not radio “illiterate” as I’ve installed many but dayum, dealerships are legal highway robbers!

This reply applies to my experience with the Toyota/JBL audio system in my 2018 Tacoma Limited.

Like most everyone else, I found the JBL system underwhelming, very underwhelming even though the dealer used it as a selling point, that "this Tacoma comes with the top-of-the-line $2300 JBL audio system." Riiight …

The first thing I did was to replace the stock JBL speakers with PowerBass speakers at the recommendation of Crutchfield in order to be compatible with the JBL 2 ohm system. I found it incredulous that JBL would put their name on those crappy stock speakers. The PowerBass speakers were a definite improvement but not what I was expecting, so sent them back and instead ordered JBL Stadium GTO960C speakers for the front, and JBL Stadium GTO620 speakers for the rear. Even though the Stadium speakers are rated at 2.5 ohms, the small reduction in volume was worthwhile; they sound great, and better than the PowerBass speakers.

I didn't find out until I tore into the fronts that the signal delivered to the front doors is filtered, so connecting the stock front wires to the crossovers that came with the Stadium speakers didn't provide a usable signal to the tweeters; it also short-circuited my plans to leverage the 3-way capability of the crossovers that came with the Stadium speakers to connect the JBL GTO20M mid-range speakers. Instead, and because I did not want to replace the stock tweeters as they seemed decent, I ran a new set of wires from the stock tweeters in the dash down and out to the doors where I connected the Stadium tweeters in parallel, and surface mounted them to the front doors; they fit perfectly and are unobtrusive. However, after further research, I'm a little concerned with the reduction in impedance on the stock amp tweeter channel as a result of having wired the new tweeters in parallel … No issues yet, a week later, after running the system at max volume a good amount of the time but, still a little concerned.

Yesterday, I replaced the stock JBL subwoofer with a Rockford Fosgate Punch P3SD2-8 subwoofer, connecting it directly to the stock JBL amp. That was a huge improvement over the stock JBL sub, even without inserting a mono amp in-between. I have a Kicker PXA200.1 amp on order that can deliver 100 watts @ 1 ohm, and the Rockford sub can be wired for 1 ohm, so there's plenty of room for further improvemnt, if needed. However, I'm going to live with the system as is for a week or two to see whether I really need/want to install the Kicker amp.

Overall, the quality of sound with the work done thus far has been a tremendous improvement. I think I could easily live with what I now have for the next several years that I'll own the truck.

Is it just a drop in speaker replacement in the existing enclosure? Any pics? Do you know what the stock wattage for the JBL amp is to the sub and how many ohms?

Yes, for the Rockford Fosgate Punch P3SD2-8 subwoofer, it was a simple drop in, though drilling new holes for the screws is necessary. Piece of cake, really.

I didn't compare specs but, I think that any of these would drop right in so long as you take the ohm rating into consideration …

    https://www.crutchfield.com/g_446250/8-Inch-Subwoofers.html?tp=68848#&nvpair=FFSize|[rank16]8"&nvpair=FFTop@mount_Depth|[rank1]Less than 3%22

No photos, sorry, but not really needed for as simple of a replacement as it was if the replacement sub is connected to the stock JBL amp. Toyota/JBL publish the watts at 440 but, there's not a RMS watts spec to be found; lots of us have searched. However, I've talked to a few people and the estimate is 200 watts RMS. The system is most often spec'd as 2 ohm, and I believe that is correct. However, I installed JBL Stadium speakers rated at 2.5 ohms in the front/rear doors, and they are just perfect; only a very small loss in volume.

    https://www.jbl.com/automotive-toyota.html

I ended up installing the Kicker PXA200.1 amp configured for 100W at 1 ohm; finished up this morning … It was more involved than simply connecting the sub to the stock JBL amp but, I'm glad I did. I can't believe the difference … It's only an 8" sub and a relatively small amp but, I could not be more pleased. Rather than having the bass setting on the head-end set to max under purely stock conditions, and even at that the bass coming from the stock JBL sub being pitiful, now I have the setting in the middle, with plenty of up-side range when needed. And that's with the 6db bass boost on the Kicker amp disabled !

The fact that you can so easily go between the different audio head units and have it be plug and play makes me wonder if they bring CarPlay and/or Android Auto in a year or two if we'll be able to just swap in the new head unit and have it 100% working. That would be nice, it is the only thing really missing I think from the truck that I want.

Really? -- I would bet "they" are "ahead" of this. They will change something to make it difficult. Sorry to be a pessimist.

I'm doing the same thing Saturday. Swapping the base Entune radio for a premium. I ordered the larger bezel and a GPS antenna. My base model doesn't have Sirius XM. Did you already have Sirius? If not, how did you hook up an antenna? Is there an antenna prewired? I have a '17 SR. Thanks

I have a SR5 with the Sirius so the antenna and wiring was already there. On the SR's I am not sure. AS I later learned , the antenna is no big deal. They can be had on Amazon and wired right into the back of your new (to you) head unit. I believe the antenna can be simply tucked up in the dash cavity and it works well.
I did exactly what you are doing (except for the antenna thing and have been happy ever since.
Good luck and make sure you get ALL of the connections hooked up.
