Hello there fellas... So tonight I was driving home in my 17 TRD Sport with less then 2k miles and in a 15 minutes ride the head unit rebooted at least 6-7 times... I did not have any problems so far, this was the first time anything like this ever happened. I drove it again around my neighborhood for a few minutes after putting my kids to sleep and it looks like it's not doing it anymore or at least it hasn't done it again... Now since I googled the whole thing and it seems to be a common issue on Entune units I am planning to fly to the dealer the minute it happens again however I am also considering getting an aftermarket unit to replace the OEM... Now my question is how do I switch the original unit for an aftermarket one that retains connection to the backup camera and the speed/consumption cables since I use it a lot? Is it even possible?

    Thanks.

So you retained the usb connection from the port under the a/c controls, steering wheel controls, gas mileage info, connection to car Bluetooth microphone?

Also the OEM unit has a lot of settings about the car such as buzzer, lights settings etc... Are those retained as well?

I have a feeling some integrated head units, like the entune, shouldn't/couldn't be replaced without some model/year specific alternative retaining the same stock setting functionality.

AVIC NEX8xxx series. I have the 8000 and I LOVE it. I have heard a lot of bad things about the Kenwood DNX series. Along the lines of early death for no apparent reason.

With the idatalink maestro and Kenwood, the car settings are there. Or you can use Carista.
I have 2usb connections, the factory one where your phone can connect and mirror (Carplay and Android Auto) and one USB inside the dash if I wanted to connect a USB stick or other device. There is also a CD/DVD and sdcard. There are a bunch of car gauges like tpms, backup sensors, rear camera with option for.front camera, heated seats, , there are lots of temperature gauges like for MAF, intake, tire temperature, exhaust manifold, etc. The Eco screen on the Entune is not there. Gas comsumption is a real time.gauge. The gas and trip time consumption is only on the multifunction display (between large two gauges on dash).
All steering wheel.controls are retained. OEM bluetooth microphone could not be used, but installed where the oem one is located.
Music playing also displays on oem multifunction display, but Bluetooth does not, you have to use the steering wheel control and Kenwood radio for bluetooth.
Garmin nav is good and you can update it when new maps come out (don't have to pay the dealer), or you can use your Apple maps or Google maps when connecting those phones to the oem usb port.

I don't get SMS text messages on the Kenwood. I did not care about this.

The Kenwood is Sirius XM ready, which means you need to add the tuner for that, is an add-on.
Pandora, Spotify etc play from whatever device you have attached to the oem usb port, but controlled from the head unit.

    2yr warranty.

    I hope this helps.

Personally, while under warranty, I'd be letting Toyota deal with it.

You paid too much for a vehicle with a 'command center' to have to shop outside for a replacement bit because the entune malfunctions.

I'm not saying the system is excellent or better can't be had. But it's certainly a lot more complex than just popping in or out an old single DIN radio.

And I suspect, once changed, that all the 'features' controlled through the head unit will become subject to argument by the dealer if you have a warranty issue with them. Blaming it on the new head unit. Just depends on the dealer I imagine.

That's very good information! Thank you! A bit out of my current budget but in the future I will consider it for sure!

I agree 100%... For right now I guess I don't feel the need to have the top of the line infotainment system even though Google car would be nice... But yeah I want to retain my warranty just in case... If it was a phone or a PC I wouldn't mind voiding it but 38k truck... Yeah I'll pass

Yeah, kind of pricey. I replaced all the speaker wiring, speakers and added an amp, so the entire system is non-OEM, with the exception to the connection to the satellite antenna, radio antenna, and connection to read all the car gauges, etc.
