I am looking to trade my 09 for a 2013 Tacoma, and my goal is to keep the stock head unit, and change everything else (please no comments about 'why, aftermarkets better' etc... I know what Im doing). I want the Entune head unit, but I cant justify $2000 for a system I am going to rip out anyways.

    My question:

I know it is way cheaper to buy the entune head unit alone, but the problem is if I get a standard model the DOES HAVE the display audio with touchscreen, but no entune, and I buy and entune unit, can I make it work WITH AN AFTERMARKET SYSTEM? I already know I cant get it to power the stock non-jbl setup... but thats ok. All I need to know is if the harness that supplies power is the same and most importantly **is the XM tuner and HD module built into the head unit or are they seperate modules that probably wont be in the non-entune model?** I ll probably be missing the XM antenna but I can fix that.

ANyone have access to 2012/2013 FSM and can post diagrams of standard display audio vs entune wiring diagrams, and maybe pictures of their actual wiring harness' would help alot!

    Thanks

I've read your post about 5 time now. My dyslexia is kicking in hardcore right now which might make my reply to you not the greatest. If I've got this right, you want to purchase a truck with the standard non entune touchscreen, with standard speakers, and then buy after the fact a entune touchscreen. It should be plug and play. All the vehicles from the factory get wired the same. If there is a feature your truck doesn't have, it's wired for it. And it's got a fuse position in the fuse box for it. I learned all this from my 2010 Tundra I installed a bunch of parts on and found wire everywhere that was hot when I tested it and not connected to anything. If I've got you all wrong and you plan to keep the non entune touchscreen and are changing out the speakers, be aware, I just read on here someone took delivery of a '13 with that head unit and it was not satellite ready or a hd radio. My personal opinion is at least checkout the entune JBL before you commit to something. Sounds bad ass.

You have me exactly right. The HD and XM... or lack thereof, is exactly why I want the entune screen, but I don't need the speakers ans sub. I'm just afraid the plug will be different, or something pertinent is missing like the xm or GPS antenna wires.

Do they offer a entune system that is non JBL? I do know that if you buy the JBL system and want to replace the speakers with non JBL aftermarkets, you have to run all new wire, it's not compatible.

No they dont. Entune and JBL are one in the same now. And yeah I know the speaker setup is entirely different, but thats ok cause it will all be changed. Only thing I need to be compatible it the head unit with the truck, not the speakers and sub and stuff. Ill figure all that part out

So the end result you want is a better then factory JBL system with entune? And you want to buy the truck with a barebones system in the truck and swap everything out and have it all work without having to wire more then just the speakers. I got it now...I closed 1 eye and stuck my tongue out when I read it this last time and understood it.

I would just be paranoid about the shark fin. If you don't have the fin it's not gonna work. If I remeber correct the guy that bought the truck that wasn't satellite ready, it was a '13 TRD O/R.

yeah the 13's without entune jbl have no sat radio or HD capabilites. and yeah its the sharkfin I think will be missing.

basically i want to buy a struck with basic radio, take the entire system out and build my own, but use the oem entune head unit to power my new system. sorry its hard to explain. This should be simple enough though

    For reference:
EDIT: one of the bottom 2 gray plugs that is labeled "unk" is the BT mic, and one of the yellowish plugs labeled "unk" is probably steering wheel controls, and I bet the last open plug is not used. Will be for other aux devices aftermarket or factory programming

Here's the one for non-navigation. From what I've researched so far, it looks like non-navigation models require a "Multimedia Interface ECU" that connects to the USB port and the radio receiver. Navigation models... so far... look like they have this built in.

This isnt gonna work. The harness' are not even close. Even if the non-entune model has a a prewired gps antenna and sat antenna, it would still need the main harness completely rewired. Its possible, but it will take WAY more work than Im willing to do. Couldnt pay me enough to figure this out. Just doesnt seem worth it to me anymore

ProForce, not sure if this would help you. It's information on installing an Entune unit in a pre-2012 JBL equipped Tacoma. It'll at least show you how the system is set up (i.e. amplifier and receiver). Maybe you could hook your own amplifier up to the "Sound Signal out" on the receiver?

From looking at the wiring diagrams, an Entune unit should be able to swap over to a pre-2012 JBL Tacoma. See the PDF below. The multi-colored lines show which pins from the PRE 2012 connectors need to be moved, and where they need to go on the 2012 connector. Toyota combined two connectors from the old model on the 2012.

I have asked this question in many threads, and still havnt got a definate answer yet.

I have the "mid grade" head unit thats got XM and steering wheel controls and all, but I want to change it to ENTUNE, would this be a direct plug and play swap? I would rather keep everything looking stock......

If you have JBL yes for the most part it would be plug and play. If not, you have to run wiring but still possible.
