Any reason why some people face them upward, some face the railing downward?

Personal preference I'm assuming. I faced mine up, it made putting the connecting brackets under the rack, so it's perfectly flat and flush on top. If you do it the other way, you'll have either the bracket sticking up or a bolt.

X2 on the personal preference, I have a mixture of both based on how I am using them. I keep some facing up so that I can throw the cone nuts in and slide them around with eye bolts in them for flexibility in tie off points etc.

I'm curious to know how these racks hold up in the winter/salt. I've put the rack on hold until spring time with my suspension since I'm doing some home renovations first. Good work guys!

Well that's a great question, The materiel has a coating called "Galvigold" which is a galvinized Zink dipped treatment. I've had a piece sitting raw out on my fence since I first bought the product back in April/May. It looks the same as when I originally bought it. I think with a nice paint job, these should be lasting us for a very long time.

Edit: Scratch that, I found my pic from earlier in the thread. In that post which I posted in May, it had been on my fence since December. So this December will be one year it's been sitting out there and it still looks the same as in this pic.

Finished the rack frame. Now just have to figure a good way to bolt it to the roof!

looks good! unless you can weld... cutting pipe is the easiest way IMO. i was concerned about the durability and how strong it would be, but I'm not anymore. haha. i can grab the rack and shake my truck around with no problem. rack is firm in place
