sidenote, in my research I found that the Unistruts also come in aluminum, which I'm considering. I know not as strong, but certainly lighter. I plan to visit the local shop to visually inspect.

You're doing a good job of exposing me as a mechanical dunce.

I'll look closer next time I'm up there... thanks for the insight.

Try searching t slot nut rather than t nut. The ones i have bought in the past I ordered from Zoro.com. Quality was good and they had freakish fast shipping. Like he said, the end caps are removable.

Also if you don't already have a track system one of these upside down it would make a perfect track as well which would make any of these slot nuts work perfectly. I've seen some track with no holes in it too.

Yeah, I read that in your first post. I don't have a track system on my shell, so I'm thinking about this and trying to visualize it. Are you imagining the Unistrut frame attached directly to the shell without feet? I'm trying to think through using it this way. Would there be enough room to attach things to the rack (room between the rack and shell)?

i have my rack just about finished...ill take a couple of pics. I did mine without tracks too.
I used coil spring spacers/helpers from autozone to rest the rack on.

I have some small sections at home I'll put something together to show you and post a pic when get there. Basically the same setup as what I have now only instead of a track it would be another strut only the side with the holes facing the shell.

@HeavyThumbs so imagine the floor is the roof of the cap. The strut would be bolted to the roof instead of a track system. Then just add the 1.5in strut as the foot, then on top of that would sit your rack. you'd prbably end up with about 3 inches of space between the bottom of your rack and the top of the shell/cap so you would have some space between for sure!

It'll probably be this weekend. Still looking for some aluminum side pieces to make it look "prettier." And tonight is the 4 year anniversary for the wife and I. So no truck time for today...

There are a couple places online that sell the aluminum in various thicknesses and lengths. Lowes carries them in the area with the linear steel sheet and angle iron. The lowes I shop at was out of the 2in wide 6ft lenght and all they had left was 1.25". I just happened to luck upon mine at a mom&pop hardware store. Happy Anniversary too, have a great night out!

    Thanks Juan, much appreciated!

@ERMB are you going to make roof rack for a dcsb? I saw the link where @ragincajun35 made one for his access cab.

Ok, that makes perfect sense! Thanks for taking the time to put some pieces together and take a picture!
