Kind of a slow day, so I finalized the switching track locations and started prepping for actually laying rail.
So far there are two side tracks (running to the centers of the figure "8") for storing cars and idle motive power as needed.
The track on the right that crosses from the curve to the straight is actually a reverse loop track and will be isolated from the rest and controlled by a reverse relay. This allows me to reverse the direction of travel and back the cars into the side tracks. I will be controlling it manually at first from a setup I made for a previous track, but might actually order an automatic setup so I won't have to remember to reverse it.
There will also be a shelf mounted "yard", right on the front of the layout, to accommodate two or three more sidings for additional storage. I have all the foam track bed in place except for the switching area's. it's better to allow the turnout track to flow naturally, then place the bed underneath rather than try to force turnouts into unnatural curves.

The plastic based track is just there to help keep alignment going into the curves while I'm in the planning stages. .

    Soldered up some power leads.

and marked the track bed in its entirety to aid in keeping the polarity correct as there will be a few sections that will need to have power brought to them due to the number of isolated connections. To avoid smoke and flames. But you never know.

Question is what will young Brett do this wheeling season that will need to be memorialized in this layout? Skipping in the fog was so last year.

I had an entire room in my house just for my track, crawled under the table to get to the center of it where the controls were.
