IME, quality of life mods have outweighed truck mods by far. Moving to a RTT from a ground tent, and a refrigerator from a cooler, were much more noticable improvements then anything I did to the truck itself, except for the tune.

You don't sound like an off-roader-im not either. If there is a fork in the road, I choose the flat and level side, not the mud pit. Vehicle preservation is high on my list, especially when I'm thousands of miles away from home living in said vehicle for a month-I just want to get to the best out of the way camp spots. That means forest service roads and an occasional trail. Some FS roads can be pretty nasty, but the only place I have taken my truck that it would not have been able to go stock was Mosquito Pass. I was just able to get down the other roads faster or more comfortably because of the mods.

And my skid plate has saved me a couple times. Never came close to touching down rock sliders, so I sold them. Keep it simple and don't let the interwebs convince you that you need to bolt a ton of expensive and heavy metal to your truck to get out there.

Like everyone has said just get out and figure out what you really need before buying anything. I've slowly modified my truck as needed. Drove it stock until I tore the back bumper off in a cross ditch, then went and got a high clearance rear bumper, got sliders because I brushed against a tree and scratched the door a little, got an engine skid and a transmission skid before I needed them but they have payed for themselves multiple times now. But my favorite mods have been a fridge and power outlets/inverter. My stock truck could go everywhere I take my modified truck but it's less stressful with the mods. Necessary no but it feels better knowing the truck is somewhat protected. Now I'm just waiting to tag my front bumper so I can get a high clearance one ;)

Normally the condition of those skid plates are the definition of "why I cannot be trusted with expensive toys". But we are in TW. :)

It's always funny whenever I go out fishing with my brother, he has to have well over $1000 in fly fishing gear and I always seem to catch more with my hand-me-down rod and and a few lures. A lot of people just like buying stuff to imagine using it and then end up not doing anything, truck stuff included.

That just might require a shock upgrade and an AAL.

FYI ... if you decide it is wise to go with skids (your choice, no pressure) ... RCI has a 15% off, 20% off if buying more than $1000.
