    The answer is it depends.

Carry what you need to self extract, or assist others in your extraction, for the location and terrain. Items for a Camel Trophy expedition through a remote jungle are different than for heavily traveled popular dunes. Basic tools, common spares (belt, tire, fluids, fuses, etc), shovel, kinetic strap/rope (with real recovery points front and rear), and traction boards might cover your needs.

Carry an appropriate first aid kit. Again, based on your terrain and location. A Camel Trophy kit will be much more comprehensive than for dunes where a person can be rescued and transported to a top notch hospital within minutes.

And carry the things that are required to navigate and survive while walking home without a vehicle (or waiting for rescue if injured or lost). What you need for a trip 100 miles into the wilderness is different than where you are a ten minute walk from a heavily traveled freeway. Arctic is different than desert is different than jungle.

I'm 99% pavement. I carry a small basic socket set, pliers, wrenches, duct tape, multi tool, recovery strap, and a few spare bulbs. In the winter a snow brush and one of those little aluminum snow shovels. Only thing on my list to add is a small first aid kit.
