Hello All! I just joined this forum. Got a price of over $900 to replace the steering rack boots on my Tacoma. Seems kind of high for 2 $12 parts. Watched a couple of videos as to how it is done. Nothing I want to try to do myself or have a friend attempt. This was not an estimate from a dealer but from a local mechanic. Been taking my truck there for years but first time I kind of felt might be taken advantage of. Someone who never had worked on my truck before. Doe's this sound about right? Thanks in advance.

Thanks all, I had expected them to give me a detailed estimate. Red Flag alert which is why I joined this forum. I will call on Monday and ask more questions now that I know the right ones to ask. I reached out to a dealer which may be the best route to go since I am now wondering it the problems are related to some recalls except a call back on Monday.

Just an update. I did have to have the entire Rack and Pinion Assembly replaced along with an alignment done on my truck. Total cost $947. Was given the detail estimate I had asked for. Note: Kind of funny. I did inquire cost from a Dealer and was told someone would get back to me. 4 days later they wanted to know what 'vehicle' I was interested in to purchase. Thanks to all who responded. I at least knew the right questions to ask from the advice I got here.
