did you bother to download the detailed data form the article and see who the main contributors to that 7 trillion are? when looking at "explicit subsidies" the us is almost non-existent compared to the rest and looking at "implicit subsidies" its still pretty low compared to the other big economies.

I did but couldn’t get it to display right on my phone. I was hoping for a better breakdown of the implicit/explicit and by country. I’ll have to check at work when I have a computer.

Well basically it all comes down to giving trillions to oil companies to pollute. EV tech, that does also pollute (currently), produces near 0 pollution after a few years of their product use while a fossil fuel vehicle will pollute their entire lifetime. When fossil fuel electric generation is weened away it will be beyond our lifetime until that happens. But it will happen.

there's no break down. its only showing how much explicit/implicit each petroleum product receives per country.

i'm also not keen on the implicit subsidy category. a tax break could be included in "implicit" when that's kind of disingenuous...a tax break is an entity paying less if it's income to the government while subsidy is using tax payer money and giving it to an entity...

That sucks, I dislike when the data used to publish a study isn’t clearly broken down. Especially when using implied/derived numbers like tax breaks, free land leases, etc.

Energy production from fossil fuels, by definition, will never be able to be renewable, ever..

At least electricity production has the ability to become less and less dependent on fossil fuels over time. But it requires more long term thinking about where to invest both public and private money. This means investing in solar, wind and electric grid infrastructure long before it's dollar for dollar profitable. Private oil companies can't do that. They need profit tomorrow, next week, next quarter. That's the competitive realm they are in. If they don't prioritize short term profits, they will get replaced by a company that does. There's no incentive to think long term as long as there's gas stations everywhere, ICE vehicles on the road and still relatively cheap oil in the ground.

Government on the other hand has the ability to use science and math to look into the future, see the direction things are headed and make the necessary investments to ensure that the required infrastructure will (more or less) be there by the time the "switchover" needs to happen. At least in theory..

Fossil fuels are the safe bet and very analog. Take it from the ground and refine it and well we know it pollutes, affects the world climate, and causes cancer in humans...but I need to pay the mortgage on my villa on Lake Cuomo. This is what the tobacco industry got caught up in, do it until we get caught. But oil gets a pass because it's way bigger than tobacco. When you try to progress the old schoolers get al bent out of shape even though it would be beneficial to all. Oil is needed for more than vehicles so their investments are safe.

That was well done. The rep riding with him never missed a beat. I had to Google it, I thought Jay had a stroke I didn’t hear about. Man he’s getting old quick.

He's creeping up on 75. He sometimes cut's away from him getting into cars since it takes him a while sometimes now more so after his bike accident.

    https://centraljersey.com/2023/10/08/no-injuries-reported-in-tesla-fire/

Electric vehicles batteries can catch fire which isn't surprising.

    https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/norwalk-parking-garage-fire-ev-charging-station-18412586.php

This is the first time I have heard of a standalone charger with the absence of an EV present catching fire. Like any electrical appliance a charging station is susceptible to combustion.

    Edit

The Hillsborough fire was at a salvage yard. Most likely a ruptured battery pack was the cause of fire.
