Having last four years of a complete altered reality nepotism shitshow where you appoint your good ole boys and grifter family with zero experience is 100% fail guaranteed no matter where you fall on political spectrum. And here we are. Gotta start somewhere.

Battery technology has been changing exponentially like computer technology has. They now make batteries that will not have thermal runaway if punctured and are 30+% lighter.

Y’all need to think bigger. Think if the service stations can literally change your batteries as easy as you can pump gas.

When solid state batteries become practical, i.e., can charge 60% in 15 minutes and last 250k miles, maybe I’ll consider an EV. However an EV that is practical is at least 5 years in the future. Currently they are still political statements.

GM the company that brought us the new Blazer and makes other classics such as Impalas and Malibu’s into forgettable vanilla sedans isn’t the foreword thinking (or successful engineering) brand I’d consider buying a vehicle that has anything other than a V8 from. Brand loyalty will get them some of the way but no one can continue shooting themselves in the pocketbook for long and continue to justify their actions on sentimentality for what was.

Electricity is generated primarily by burning coal or natural gas.

Sure, there is a percentage from wind, hydro and nuke. The lion's share is coal and nat. gas.

Just imagine a long 1100 mile road trip. Drive 250 miles, spend about 3.5 hours driving, then you need to charge.......1 hour....more??? Imagine the line at the "Plug In". Gonna look like the Energy Crunch in the '70s. Trip time will increase by 25+%.

Making batteries is not an environmentally friendly process.

You think people bitch alot about replacing a single battery and spend $150. Just wait for the outcry when the entire batt system needs to be replaced and needing to spend deep into the 4 figure range........ and a day in the shop.

Thanks just the same. I'll burn dinosaurs or biofuels before electric.

    Oh c’mon...
Tercel, Yaris, Camary and Corolla are hot sedans? And I’m not defending GMs models looks or performance but I’ll say build quality has gotten better even if still “vanilla”.

btw I’m not sure if tax talk is political so we might need to stay on topic?

There is no economic reason to purchase an EV. At this time it’s style and politics. Huge carrots and sticks are required to get people in an EV. It requires upto a $7,500 credit to get people to buy an EV. EV’s are given special use of HOL’s (High Occupancy Lanes). It requires federal and state actions to outlaw ICE (Europe and California in 2035) to force people to buy an EV.

Transitional technology = not ready for prime time. Also see: Dreams that requires magic wands and heavy subsidies.

    Almost forgot.

What happens when the ambient temperature falls into the below 0F range? A large part of the USA has temps like this during the winter. Battery capacity really tanks in cold. LI-ION are really bad when cold.

I believe Tesla uses battery capacity to warm the battery pack......isn't that self-defeating????

I don’t think any of those models are marketed on past love affairs with previous classics in America. And Toyota has become the worlds largest auto manufacturer by making smart decisions in adapting to market demands, not government bailouts. You’ve got to not care about the vehicle past the warranty period to even consider buying an American commuter vehicle over Toyota or Honda.

    https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.fo...ng-myths-about-federal-oil-gas-subsidies/amp/

How many times do we pay for oil based products (including energy use).
    1. Transportation obviously (also transportation of goods)
    2. Exploration and Extraction subsidies which is a tax incentive (we also own the BLM and US FOREST SERVICE land and 12 miles off shore)
    3. Refrigeration/storage (energy used)
There are more but I want itto be known that I’d prefer the incentive helping the transition to a new technology.

but we probably need to salvage this topic before we lose it

Biofuels, are likely the long term answer. But there is little to no research in this area.

Electric is a bridge. It may be suitable long term for large cities (short trips), but a big part of the USA is not large cities. Large, open expanses exist between the Ohio River and the Rockies.

Pound for pound, a battery will not hold as much energy as a liquid fuel.

    You are correct.
    Model S 0-60 2.5 sec.
    C8 Z51 0-60 2.8 sec.

I wouldn't call it smoking. But yes faster.... for the time being anyways. C8 Z06, ZR1 yet to be seen.

So........ its quicker than a Vette from 0-60.

How many times will this be used? On-ramp, assuming no one is in front of you. Stop-n-Go traffic? Yeah sure.....

    Worthless data for everyday use.
