Remember auto shows? I use to go to COBO center every January to see the concept cars and sit in the new models. Auto companies may not be showcasing this year however, this is the time they would have set for deadlines to showcase.

Maybe it’s to soon for Texas to have all these electric cars.

Though you can use the vehicle battery to run your house if the power goes out. ((Shrug))

Texas has a high percentage of windmill electrical generation. The things are freezing up.

    Seems a combination of factors...

Gov. Gregg Abbott said in a Twitter post that the state's power grid has not been compromised.
"The ability of some companies that generate the power has been frozen. This includes the natural gas & coal generators,"

Everyone that has made the decisions about Texas power generation and distribution should be kicked in the junk, then run out of town on a rail. Anyone supporting one more wind turbine should be immediately fired, and expelled from the state back to The People's Republk of California!

GM wants to go all electric? Guess what, we don't have the electrical generation nationwide to support it. We aren't building real power plants...we're shutting them down. You don't see the CHICOMs shutting down their coal fired plants. They're building a bunch of them. Makes one wonder what's really behind this "green energy/global warming/climate change" movement in the west?

Well Texas has decided to run their own power grid because of too much govt. regulation and never prepared their infrastructure for cold environment like the govt. has warned them to. Other states with renewable energy in the cold are doing just fine with distribution.

Nissan Leaf or Tesla both were claimed to be able to back feed from stuff I read a few years back. Does that still hold water?
Think about the stagnation of growth in the US economy. The Federal grant money that will be spent on beefing up the grid will help boost the working class and get many people working in higher paying positions.

Power generation needs to be diversified and needs back up plans which will likely be fossil fuel based. However fusion and fission are my first choice - as long as they are not near fault lines (Fukushima).

Why are Texas wind turbines freezing? We have them here in Northern NH on mountain tops. It gets -40F routinely and they work just fine. Texas try to save a few bucks and forgo the de-icing technology?

Are you talking about replacing all of those 6-figure incomes that were just killed under this administration. Probably 10-15K direct jobs, and 10X that many support jobs. Hate to break it to you, but the handful of government jobs isn't going to put a dent in that lost income.

Don't get me started about having to import oil again. We were a net exporter, meaning we wouldn't have to import oil from the middle east, not to mention we wouldn't have to have to maintain a huge military force there. Now we're going to import oil, and continue to be embroiled in military excursions in far away lands. But by golly we're going to throw out a few government crumbs to those formally huge earners no longer working in the petroleum industry...hey, I'm sure they can get unemployment and welfare now...right?

Britain’s most popular motoring brand will not come with an internal combustion engine from 2030 after Ford revealed that it would go all-electric for new cars in Europe by the end of the decade.

Ford, one of America’s three big automotive manufacturers, has not made a car in Britain for two decades. It confirmed that its plant at Cologne in Germany would become the central location for its drive into electrification in a $1 billion investment programme.

While Ford has closed its petrol engine plant at Bridgend in South Wales...

The announcement was seen as a statement of intent by the American group, in contrast with the vaguer zero-emission targets of its main rivals in the European market.

    Volvo now:

    https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...olvo-to-go-all-electric-by-2030-idUKKBN2AU0AU

Volvo’s entire car lineup will be fully electric by 2030, the Chinese-owned company said on Tuesday, joining a growing number of carmakers planning to phase out fossil-fuel engines by the end of this decade.

“I am totally convinced there will be no customers who really want to stay with a petrol engine,” Volvo Chief Executive Håkan Samuelsson told reporters when asked about future demand for electric vehicles. “We are convinced that an electric car is more attractive for customers.”

The Swedish carmaker said 50% of its global sales should be fully-electric cars by 2025 and the other half hybrid models.

    https://9to5mac.com/2021/03/11/toyota-apple-car-comments-support/

As reported by the Wall Street Journal, Toyoda made the comments during a news conference fro the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association. He explained that the key for entering the car industry is recognizing that you’ll need to provide support to customers for 40 years.

When asked about Apple’s rumored plans for Apple Car, Toyoda said:

Anyone can make a car if they have the technical ability, but, once they make a car, I hope they’ll recognize they have to steel themselves for 40 years of responding to customers and to various changes.

    He went on to elaborate:

Technology companies entering the car industry means that the car industry has a future and choices for customers will widen. We welcome new entries, but I don’t think it would be fair for those people who are newly entering to say, ‘We don’t need to steel ourselves for 40 years, and you other folks who have been around for many years, you do that.’

    Sorry for the clickbait link:
    https://www.motor1.com/news/495759/mercedes-amg-73-models-specifications/

Gaining an "e" at the end, the 73e models will all share a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine with an electric motor believed to be largely borrowed from the zero-emissions Mercedes EQC crossoverand EQV van. The e-motor will reportedly be good for as much as 201 horsepower (150 kW) and an instant torque of 268 lb-ft (363 Nm).

Combined with the conventional eight-cylinder engine, the Mercedes-AMG 73e cars will unleash "previously unattained levels of power and torque." In fact, we're hearing the cars will "at least match” the 805-hp muscle delivered by the AMG GT Concept introduced at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show. The combined torque should be enough to move mountains, with the British magazine claiming the electrified AMGs will develop a massive 740 lb-ft (1,003 Nm).

The GT73e should be the first to break cover and offer neck-snapping acceleration by sprinting to 62 mph (100 km/h) in less than three seconds en route to more than 200 mph (322 km/h). The Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid rival will be followed by an AMG S73e based on the latest S-Class and also by an AMG SL73e as a worthy successor to the 186-mph roadster from more than two decades ago.

The report goes on to say AMG's new breed of performance cars will have an electric mode, in which case the vehicles will be purely rear-wheel drive. It is believed a similar plug-in hybrid setup will be installed in the new C63e, but with a smaller 2.0-liter four-cylinder mill instead of the V8 for a total output expected to surpass the 500-hp mark.

If Mercedes can do this with a car - can Toyota and the others do this with a pickup? Chevy tried with a Silverado and Tahoe - but the battery tech was laughable - from 16mpg to 21mpg
