In an attempt to prevent future frustrations in you P0401 "journey" let me give you my understanding of how the system works. On every start up the PCM will start doing it own systems checks call drive monitors, there is a predefined order in which things are checked depending on conditions. With your P0401 for the evap monitor to run the truck has to be shut off for a minimum of 8 hrs, the time component, the engine coolant temperature has to be within 10* of the outside air temp, to prove it is a cold start and the fuel tank has to be between 1/4 and 3/4 full. The PCM is monitoring the rise in air pressure in the fuel tank and it expects a certain pressure build up over a certain amount of time and it has to do this 2 times, the two trip component of the test. This is a self clearing code, will it be stored in long term memeory of the PCM, that depends on the stratagey in the PCM.

The scenario is that you put a gas cap on her and drive her around for 3 months thinking you have fixed it, if you keep the fuel tank full all the time the test will never run and that monitor will not clear, the CEL will only illuminate if the PCM finds a fault, not if the all of the monitors have not run. If you live is a "smog" jurisdiction you wont know until you get her tested. She will fail due to incomplete monitors and then you get to pay the smog guys a second time to test it, most of them will do you a service and check to see if all of the monitors have run and the truck is "smog ready" before they charge you a second time, check before you get her checked the first time.

If you have cleared the codes and are starting from new, then ALL monitors will have to be run and sometimes this generates additional problems so let it self clear and check monitor status/smog ready occasionally, each scan tool calls it something different. Fun, 'aint it?
