Wondering if anyone out there has used Evapo-Rust on their Tacoma. It seems perfect because its non toxic but would like some tips or suggestions on how to use it.

After this long winter here in Boston I'd like to use it to get rid of the rust.
I used a product that had phosphoric acid in it, it gets the rust off great but it was very harsh and actually dissolved some of the clear coat and a little bit of the white lettering on my mud flap. NO GOOD!

    Any help would be appreciated

    Cheers,

I have no experience with evapo-rust, but I have used Rust-X with success. I'm sure it works the same. I had an old MG that had rust issues in the floorboards and used the Rust-X to treat them with. I used a wire wheel on the end of a drill motor taking it down to bare metal and treated it. Rust-X is the color and consistency of non-fat milk, just brush it on and let it dry.

I couldn't get all the rust removed as the metal was pitted but I never had any other issues after treatment. I suppose you could just treat light surface rust without the wire wheel, but the heavy stuff needs to come off. Hope this helps out.

Oh interesting I will have to check that stuff out. I applied this stuff today but the directions say you really have to soak the rusty objects for 1-12 hours which could be quite hard to do on such a larger area but I am experimenting with it and seeing how it works with just a simple spray and soak.
    What exactly is a MG?
This evaporust product seems nice because its quite gentle and does not seem to be very noxious smelling. I think a wire brush, good lighting and elbow grease is where its at with this task.
I have heard some people say silicone grease is a good thing to apply to metal after you remove the rust because it will shield it from other rust causing elements like salt and water. I will have to do more research on that however.

OP, I've used Evapo-rust and still have a partial quart around here. IMHO it works good but only under certain conditions. First, as you know it has the consistency of water and putting it on vertical surfaces and the like does not work so good....it just runs off.

Second, it is temperature driven. At 50 deg. F its going to take forever to do much. At 120 deg. F its fairly fast and works pretty good.

If you can immerse a part in it and let it sit covered, and it is warm to hot, it will work good. I use it when I can pool the liquid around the rust or submerse a small part and let it sit.

My go to is a product by SEM called Rust Seal. Its one of the products the pros in body shops and car restorers use. Unfortunately it is outrageously expensive but I have used it for years and really like it.
