Ok just to clear this up,

ECT is for automatic transmissions ONLY.
    1st gens came with ECT.
2nd gens did not have ECT.
3rd gens have it on the automatic 6 speed.

ECT for the 2016 is actually very good. I debated getting a manual since they run better behind a 4cylinder, but the dealer didn't have any in stock. I test drove a automatic and played with the ECT, it allows the 2.7 to rev up real high almost like a manual. I thought it wasn't bad, so I bought the truck. I compared it later with my friends 2011 single cab manual and with the ECT button on, it does wake the motor up, allowing it to keep up with a manual.

my bad...thnx for clearing it up. Its the one thing that the bigger fatter 2016 2.7 A/T must have to be driveable in my opinion. In addition to the tighter, longer shift points, it makes the throttle much more sensitive. Not sure how, but it does.

Have you ever driven a Prius/Civic or another vehicle that has "eco mode"? Basically if you hit the ECT button, it takes it off eco mode and changes the transmission mapping to rev freely.

Yeah, I've driven both. Good comparison. In fact I came within an eyelash of buying a full size Prius bout 4 yrs ago. Long story, but I test drove it for 3 days. Ultimately went with the Camry for the better ride. But 45- 50 MPG was very attractive when gas was like $4 gallon. Still might buy a used one as a commuter. Proven reliability. I wouldnt buy the compact Prius though. Very harsh ride.
I dont recall the ECO mode having a really dramatic effect on performance, but ECT sure does in the Tacoma 2.7

2001 Prerunner, 2.7L, A/T here, 2wd.. 4 door. Definitely underpowered. I use the ECT button sometimes. However, not as slow as a dog as our CT200h Lexus used to be.

    Question for you guys:

What diff fluid and what trans fluid are you guys using in this?
