Ever run tank dry? 22 gallons top off?

Anyone ever let their tank go dry on them? If so, where does the needle point to? in the middle of "E"? When I ran it down 19.75 gallons to get my 500 mile tank the needle pointed in between the last bold black hash and the "E".

Also, Is the tank officially 21 gallons when the gas pump clicks off or does one need to squeeze more in after click off? Once I got about a full gallon in after click off to the point of seeing fuel at the top of the filler tube. I do not normally do that. I usually only put 1/2 gallon over the click when pumping my own. Oregon doesn't allow citizens to pump their own gas so that only happens when traveling. So are the V6 tanks capable of 22 gallons topped off?

Both of these things you're doing could get expensive.

You should never need to know these answers.

Running a dry tank is a good way to toast a fuel pump. They get their cooling from being submerged in fuel. Not to mention the possibility of sucking up sediment that could create some premature system clogging.

Overfilling your tank is a great way to flood the emissions system and create some pricy repairs.

Burn up fuel pump, clog up fuel lines, run out of gas somewhere. Just to see how much you can "really" put in there?
345 miles with 18.9 gallons. Good enough for me.

That's a really good question, I have pushed mine way below e and it seems like it just keeps going. Wow 21 gallons, I've almost gotten 20 never that close. Usually a car will start chugging when your almost out, I've never had that happen.

This is the most I've put in at once. The needle will go pretty far into the E. About four gallons in the tank when the light comes on

Truck never sputtered, got to filling station just fine

I rarely ever let the gauge get below 1/4. Just my 2 cents.

    ^ what he said.
I rarely let any of my vehicles go too far below 1/4 tank for all the reasons stated by others.

Running dry is bad news, agreed. But, it's good to know how far you can go with what's left, in case of a real life zombie apocalypse. Or, in case you have a spastic colon and refuse to use public restrooms, like myself. That last gallon has saved my ass more than a few times.

Pump is cooled and lubricated by fuel running through it, not by being submerged.

There isn't some hidden sediment that will only get sucked up if the tank is run low, the draw is always off the bottom.

Damn, I'm sweating bullets if the light comes on and I don't see a sign within 2 minutes. By the time it makes it to the top of the E I'm dropping speed and am damn near dehydrated. Don't even want to imagine what would happen if it got lower then that.

Closest I ever came was with Betty, my redhead 2008 that didn't survive the trip from Florida to Oklahoma in August last.

    434 miles on 18.45 gals, for a tank-average of 23.53mpg.

That was her last tank, loaded to the balls and draggin low as I limped across the southern US while moving. I went around 65-70 MPH, no trailer but all highway with a steady foot.

That tank, IIRC, got me from the Sarasota area up through Alabama and into Mis'ippi, where I filled one last time.

Loosey-anna took her from me. I finished the trip in a rental Dodge Caliber and felt dirtier for it.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
I usually always fill up at 1/2 tank, and never let it go below 1/4 tank, that shit's hard on your fuel pump bro, don't make a habit of doing that or you're gonna kick yourself later.

I had an old 92 Camry sport with a busted fuel gauge, and we ran that thing completely out of gas 3 or 4 times a month for several years. I got 260,000 miles on that car before I sold it to my brother in law and he still drives it around. We experienced none of these issues that you guys are talking about. Toyota devolution perhaps?

In case you hadn't noticed, the technologies and hardware used in modern EFI fuel pumps are...shall we say...slightly different today than they were .... 23 years ago?

That was precisely my point. Why would fuel system devolve and not evolve after 23 years?

Ran my 1st gen out of fuel once. Weeks later a code popped. Determined to be weak fuel pressure. Now, the truck still ran fine most of the time, and I ran it like that for 6 months. Swapped out the pump and code went away. Coincidence, maybe or maybe not. I know I don't want to chance it with my 2nd gen though.
