Why do you consider it DEvolving to be lighter, cheaper to make, and just as durable so long as it isn't 'run dry'?

PROTIP: Don't run your fuel pump dry and it won't be pissed at you. Film at 11.

Thousands of people run out of gas everyday, it's a common occurrence. They tout durability. If I could run out of gas repeatedly 23 years ago in a Toyota, without damaging a thing, I would think I could do the same today. Technology is supposed to advance. I try not to get low because of what people like you tell me. I don't know if you are right, and some here seem to disagree with you, but I still listen, and try to heed advice.

And lots of folks that don't friggin' know how to change a goddamn tire pay $$$ money every month for a AAA membership to use once every 4 years.

Doesn't mean it's the smart thing to do.

Evolution of technology is often 'good'. Sometimes, there are tradeoffs.

Watch film of a '58 Buick Roadmaster in a collision test with a modern sedan. Guess which one protects the driver better?

Does that mean safety technology has devolved since then?

Does that mean the fuel economy, price, availability, etc etc etc is or isn't 'worth' the tradeoff?

I'm not saying the modern submerged pump is better or worse. I'm saying its a different design with different characteristics and strengths and weaknesses.

An air breathing engine back when I was a kid had an intake manifold and a one-two-four (or even six!) barrel carb.

Because it was 'sturdier' and more 'mechanic friendly' than a modern sealed unit EFI....is it better or worse when my modern 4 cyl grocery getter can compete with a V8 muscle car off the dealer floor from 1968 with BETTER safety ratings?

Don't paint with such a broad brush, mon.

I know nothing about it, sorry lol. I'd just expect the most important thing in a fuel systems design would be to not toast parts when you do something as common as run out of gas. I don't expect to brake an axle when I blow out a tire, though I suppose it's possible. No I don't have AAA lol thanks ;)

The most important thing a parts designer knows is the sting of the lash from his corporate overlords when his parts is too expensive, too heavy, or too complicated.

It USED to be as you say, but modern manufacturing has long since been ruled by the bean counters. Yes, Toyota too.

You can't have heavy, overly complicated, not as reliable and expensive to make parts any more. Accounting simply won't allow it. They'll replace you with some guy that got fired from Takata.

But thankfully, there are some ports in the storm we can go to. Tacos are still better built, longer lasting, and stronger than the competition.

Living way way up North , I dont take the chance of frost developing within the fuel system . If my tank gets below 3/4 , I make sure its topped off the next day .
For you guys thinking that a nice warm garage is the way to keep your truck from forming frost on the gas tank, as soon as you take it outside , condensation will occur .
The above statement stands true for extreme cold climates .

In the summer I don't like to let it go below a 1/4 tank. In the winter I try to keep it above a half tank. Most I've ever put in was 18.5 gallons. Probably drove about 30 highway miles with the light on to need that much. No reason to run it past that.

Never saw a 6 barrel carb. Saw engines with 3 carbs x 2 barrels, and 2 carbs x 4 barrels.

What car/engine was it on ?

Never run it out, but filled 21.7 one time and 21.8 another. Fuel pump still works fine... The gauge actually goes quite a bit below the E.

I typically will drive 50 miles with the fuel light on and I'm on 350,000+ miles of Tacoma driving. No issues. But I don't leave it like that overnight or anything.

I would rather my engine evolve in efficiency than have a fuel system that could run dry

I see engines with multiple carbs, but NO single 6 barrel carb. Holley at one time (late 60's early 70's) made a 3 barrel, but I have never seen a true single carb with 6 barrels, could it be on aircraft or outboard marine motors?

Thanks for helping me remember lmgtfy, but your google only seems to confirm that there are no 6 barrel carbs, but lots of 3-2 barrel setups.

Yes, but as noticed from the link, they're referred to as 6 barrels commonly.

Is the tank in the '13 bigger than it was in the '10? In my 2010 DCSB V6, the most I ever put in a tank was still less than 20 gallons and that was after the fuel light was on for an uncomfortably long time, and I think the fuel light would come on somewhere between 16 and 17 gallons. My first fill up on the 2013 DCSB V6 was 18.4 gal before the fuel light came on.

As for burning out fuel pumps, I know of at least a few guys who've had to replace fuel pumps in the motorcycle gas tanks because the ran them low one too many times. I would expect a truck fuel pump to be a little beefier because the fuel has to travel farther to the engine.
