To be clear, I always slow down, always drive the posted limit no matter if it's sunshine or not, and always drive cautiously. I've lost way too many people to the road, especially on motorcycles, and don't plan to leave my family in that way. But this thread was about if it's okay to engage 4x4 at higher speeds and remain in it at highway speeds, which it is as a part of that being cautious. If the road is fine, but the sun is going down and I feel there may be a surprise patch of slipperiness I will gladly slow down as well as engage 4x4 since, you know, RWD is the worst case scenario for hitting a patch of ice.

Doesn't matter if you're going 45 or 85 if you hit a patch of black ice in RWD haha ask me how I know!

good set of tires can make a world of difference as well though.

    Just something to consider.

This is true. This is exactly why every rear drive car and truck is in a disabling crash every time in rains or snows. 100% of them. It's an accurate statistic. NHTSA figures from 2013.

I really like the guy who went into 4hi in the middle of a skid and "it saved him".

Some of the posters in this thread are some non driving fucks.

I drive 20,000+ miles a year and the worste drivers I've ever encountered by far (in the US) are Californians. Starts sprinkling and they all slow down to 30 so they don't hydroplane and die. Puddle in the highway? Better to 15 just in case...

Don't get me started on the fact that 4 way stops are more difficult to solve than a Rubik's cube for these sheltered people. Haha

    Wow, 20,000 miles a year.

PS, not everyone who lives in California is from California. Some of us just got tired of our frames rusting to pieces, it being 4.8 degrees for 32 months out of the year, and a flat landscape that sucked dick for miles.
