I'm thinking about trying to get a job at a toyota dealership in the parts department. I'm thinking 1) I've had a lot of experience with cross referencing part numbers and using FSM schematics from using the FSM a lot for my own truck on projects 2) I can probably study while I'm just sitting there and no customers are around 3) maybe i'll get a parts employee discount?

Anyone ever work there before? Is my line of thinking correct? Anyone know if they make you piss in a cup to work the parts counter?

    Don't count on it.
You're being paid to work, not to study.
There is plenty to be done when there are no customers around.
You will be busy the entire time you are there.
Most jobs do these days. Too much liability that falls back on the company if an employee fucks up.

A little of this and a little of that.
    Good luck on the job.

We can hardly get students to work at my work, too busy studying and don't clean up at all, I wouldn't want to be that guy and it wouldn't represent the company well. As for piss in a cup I would say they do. I wouldn't want to be that guy either

Parts guys at the two Toyota dealerships I've been to definitely have time to study up. But they don't.

And yes the odds of you having to pee in a cup are very high. A couple years ago I would have been the last person to say this, but limiting your job options because you like to smoke weed is about the lamest thing ever. Good luck having a meaningful future - former crack heads will now get jobs over you.

sorry I'm going to have to disagree with "being busy when no customers are there". lol I worked at Beaman Toyota downtown Nashville,TN in the shop and if you going to be a parts person. You'll have plenty of free time if no customers aren't there. Only thing taking up your time besides them is when technicians call for parts or truck day. Other then that you'll have alot of free time lol. I use to bs with the parts people when we were slow. They'd be on FB or doing as you plan on doing and studying for school. It's a laid back job at least at beaman it was.

    Depends on the city.

Around here, any time I walk into the parts department, the counter is stacked up at least 2:1 customer/employee and usually more.
In a one-horse town that barely qualifies to have a dealership? There might be some down time, but Ft. Lauderdale is going to be more like Los Angeles than it will be like Nephi Utah.

Around here, if they don't have enough customers to keep all of the employees busy, they cut their staffing. Goes for most any retail store. The worst is Albertson's... I won't go there because they flex the registers so there are always 4 or more people in each line.

The dealer I bought my truck from must be doing great, the 3 times I was there I saw more employees than customers. They had 1 guy sitting in a chair whose only job that I could see was waiting for a customer to drive up to service and putting a paper sheet on the floor.

    are you kidding me?

real work ethic you have there.

what in your 23 y/o mind gives you the thought that you can take a job and have time of your own while on the clock?

2 of the three reasons you qualify yourself for the job are self serving. you may want to change your attitude if you want to succeed in the demanding and competitive work force.

FYI- ANYWHERE you work, if you are involved in any type of workplace accident, they will get an immediate sample. Even if you are in a coma.
And it will be held against you. Just saw it happen in March.

:D I'm with you 100% here. If you're screening potential employers because they drug test then you need to re-evaluate your life choices. I have known people that have done that and now they're still unemployed and pissed off at "the man" because they can't find a job. Worthless drains on society...

Nashville is far from a "one horse town" lol. Only reason cali is booming at the toyota dealership cause of all the tree huggers out there corn holing each other with their little prius lol. Those things were always in the shop getting worked on.

Man, this thread is full of idealistic know it all whiners. :jerkoff:Get over yourselves. I have 6 4000 level classes that, on top of requiring my presence on campus 22 hours a week, each requires at least about 8 hours of reading per class per week (do the math, that's 48 hours). If i wanted to work somewhere that took up every second of my time being there, i'd work in a restaurant as a waiter or bartender, as I have for the past 4 years, running around like a chicken with my head cut off to make sure some rude smuck is as happy as can be, or every spoon, window and cup is triple polished, making 15-20 an hour after tips, and NONE of those jobs require drug tests. BUT I need to study and have enough money to EAT and KEEP THE LIGHTS ON... So i'm looking for something at minimum wage so I can just scrape by. If the company doesn't need people sitting around, then they shouldn't hire them to do so. But I know they do, i've seen it before, at places like car dealership parts desks, cigar shops, franchise hotel lobbies, etc. especially in college towns like the one i'm in. So don't give me crap for trying to find the BEST opportunity that fits MY current life situation. It's called being a rational actor in the economy, all units are trying to maximize well being at minimum cost. It's how the world works.

And if you have such a problem with me asking about the piss test, well when it comes to this, it's 2012, it's up for full legalization in multiple states this November so get with the times ... and as the Libertarians would say Don't Tread On Me. :crapstorm:

Thanks to TonkaCorey and Neontrail for keeping it real and being the only ones with actual usable input.

Mods should lock this thread :locked:

Telling the mods to lock a thread just because you don't like the answers is a little immature, sorry dude but that's "keeping it real". Not personally insulting you but that general mentality is really whats wrong with the country, "work ethic" now means doing just good enough to not f&*k up and not get fired. Trust me, I'm a high school teacher and I see it in hundreds of kids. They work just hard enough to not fail, and when they don't do their work its always "i had ---ball practice" or "dance practice" or whatever else you want to fill in.

What do you think will happen when you get done with school, get a full time job, buy a house and then need to do work on the boiler or roof or whatever. Your employer isn't going to care how busy you are at home. Same with if you plan on raising kids, your employer isn't going to say "oh, you were up all night with the baby, ok, slack off today".

I work a full time job and have 2 different bosses. Neither one cares about me needing to split 2 cords or firewood or put the new roof on the house or even find time to set up my retirement account.

That's life, if you expect people here to sympathize with you just because you are a busy college student maybe you shouldn't post anymore:rolleyes:

Quit your whining. I worked a full time 50+ hour a week job and took a full time class load throughout college. I was gone from 7am - 11:30pm M-F during college. Now I work my full time job and run landscaping business on side after work during the week and weekends.

You're right... It's 2012. It currently is ILLEGAL, HASN'T BEEN LEGAL FOR A LOOONG TIME, AND WILL NEVER BE LEGAL. That's why employers piss test... BECAUSE IT'S ILLEGAL whether you agree with it or not.
