So anyone have recommendations on which brand/company?

And it seems a cross bar between the two would act as a far better stiffner.

I'm still laughing about the wife noticing the difference that bed stiffeners make in the ride of the truck. The only way a wife might notice those things is if you cuffed her to the new tie downs. I put the Total Chaos ones in mine as a preventative measure as I often carry loads on top of the cap and offroad quite a bit. I noticed zero difference in how the truck rides and Tacomas generally suck at donuts. Really wish someone would figure out how to engage the rear locker in 2wd.

You really think our diffs are this weak? We have the same diffs that come in the Hilux overseas, and if you know anything about the Hilux then youd know theres no worry. I really doubt some donuts will f it up. Why did you even buy the truck if you think it's that weak?! Toyota is actually known in the off road world for their stout differentials.

I agree that axle wrap really makes these tacomas suck at donuts but some weight in the back fixes that. Plus having a manual sure makes them easier and more fun

About my gf noticing the difference. It's actually really noticeable to me and her how bumps and off roading now feels with it installed. You really can't notice The rear end wobble has decreased? Any stiffening, especially on our flimsy open c channels should be easily noticed. Sorry you didn't notice the difference

I'm pretty sure our trucks use a system now that'll make that all but impossible to do

I would go with total chaos. I noticed the top of my bed move in much closer with the very top bolt. Others don't go up that high on the side of the bed and therefore wouldn't be as effective in stiffening and preventing future flex and damage

I've actually thought about that as well

Technically when your doing doughnuts there is less resistance from the tire-to-ground contact friction so its actually easier on the 3rd. o_O

And I don't do donuts in a high friction area like a concrete parking lot So I think we're all good here lol

except there's been 3 threads I can think of on here where someone was doing exactly this and their diff blew up.
there's currently a recall on the rear diffs
there's a lot of known issues with them howling right now and toyota still hasn't issued a fix

I know they have a great reputation hence why I did buy one. I personally haven't had any issues with mine as of yet, besides it being in for a transmission inspection right now since its been running hot. But there's a lot of threads on here about how many issues people have been having with the new 3rd gen.

TSB issued for driveline bind, then of course there's the low transmission fluid from factory that many have had and what mine is currently being checked for.
I love my truck and that's one of the reasons I wouldn't abuse it like this. In all fairness no matter how strong the diff is doing stuff like that is asking for trouble. One thing suddenly giving a lot of grip on one tire and your diff can be destroyed.

... The truck is build with C frames so its suppose to flex. In structural design stiffening members can actually increase local loads in certain areas causing prematuring fracture or yielding under intense loading like off roading or towing.

I've got a manual... the current recall I've seen is for low diff fluid and I've been checking mine

I'll look into the other TSBs you've mentioned. I wish toyota would have had a lot of this figured out before production

...you realize he's saying that by stiffing it you can prevent it from flexing like its supposed to and causing it to focus strain in certain spots and break stuff right?

not sure the procedure for checking it on the manuals but if its anything like the autos its a long process, and hard to do on your own.

This is making me think of this video.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_f3CAnH7WIM

Many dodge fan boys will say oh thats because its stronger. Look at big rigs a lot of them flex too. The flex can allow it to transfer strain and spread it over the whole thing not one local point causing failure. Flex at times is a good thing.

Think of it this way, when they build skyscrapers they're built in a way that they can flex and sway in the wind. If they couldn't the stress could be concentrated on one column and cause it to fail.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
It's the same as the diff...pull the fill plug and stick your finger in the hole to check the level.

How much does the bed seem to be flexing in this video? an L-Bracket on the back of a bed will keep the bedsides square to the bottom. No disrespect to the OP, but I don't see how in the world you would ever feel that while driving. The bed itself has very little to do with stiffening the rear end of the truck.
