    How loud was the clunking?

I keep reading about a "rattle" and a "clunk", but I don't hear it as much as feel it in the wheel. It just feels ridiculously loose.

    Hmm...that worries me.

My issue sounds exactly like everyone else describes with the exception of the noise. I may get a little bit of noise, but it's not significant. But I know in the past I've read posts by at least one or two other people who said the same thing, they get the loose feeling but not so much of a clunk.

I'm getting ready to replace the intermediate shaft myself because I'm out of warranty. The part costs $226, so I'd like to make sure this is going to make a difference.

I feel the "clunk" more than I hear it. Sounds like you have it. There's some good info on this site about that I read a while back. Look up zip tie mod, one of those posts had pictures of the cause and then it becomes obvious what you are feeling/hearing.

    Thanks for the reply.

I actually already have a zip tie jammed in there now. It's been there since sometime last spring I think. It seemed to make a noticeable difference when I first did it. Now it's back to feeling loose again. Could be the zip tie is wearing through I suppose.

I'll probably go pick up the intermediate shaft on Monday, so I have until then to decide for sure if I should do it, but I think I almost certainly will. I'll have the time and opportunity to go at it this coming week. This problem has been driving me nuts for a long time.

Did you jam the zip tie in, or do the criss cross zip tie thing? I remember when i read that thread that the poster had two ties wrapped around the slipjoint? And I also remember, others were posting how they just slipped the tie through the place where it go's through the firewall. I am very interested in how you make out, I'm confident I have this issue in my 2011. Good luck man, let us know how you make out.

Where at in PA? I was married in Somerset, in-laws are there.

Mine isn't the criss-cross thing. I just saw that for the first time the other day. The other one isn't through the firewall though, it's kind of between the lower and upper shafts, but they do not connect there. It's kind of hard to explain without a picture what the zip tie goes through. Actually, when I first read it, it made zero sense to me why that would make a difference. But I was desperate and others said it did, so I gave it a try and it did have an effect. It still wasn't perfect, but it was good enough that I was able to live with it for a long time. I have checked and the zip tie is still in place, but I haven't pulled it out to see if it's wearing through. It was fairly difficult to get in there.

Before I put in the new shaft, I think I'll cut that zip tie out and see if I notice much of or any difference now without it.

ETA: Near Pittsburgh in Butler County, but I'm out in State College these days.

Well, I bought the shaft and a friend and I tried to install it last night. Unfortunately we could not get the old shaft off. It didn't want to budge. It's probably corroded to the lower shaft.

But right now it's my only vehicle, so I didn't want to get forceful and chance being stuck without a vehicle for any amount of time, so I had to abort the operation.

I'm either going to be calling a dealership and see if they'll install it for me, or try to return the part I guess.

Dealers act like the $$$ is comeing out of there paycheck, I would think they would like the extra work, whats the cost if the customer had to pay for this, I also read where the 1st gen had this problem.

Hula girl on dash, that's it.
Just started doing it a couple months ago and it's really noticeable if i have to steer through any uneven surface like when i try to pull a rockford in a snowy parking lot. Funny that they can put out a recall for a floor mat but not for faulty springs or steering shafts. Lame.

How much does the dealer charge if you are out of warranty?
