Driving habits are #1. Best mod to your truck is between the ears.

If you have a manual, then keep acceleration at around 80-85% load and shift at around 2000-2200 rpm. Steady foot, every time to tap the accelerator you get tip-in fuel enrichment that uses up fuel. Keep tires inflated. Use extended no-brake coast-downs when you won't hold up traffic. Learn how to conserve momentum and where you can eliminate those little times when you don't have to blip the gas (parking lots!).

Have a good alignment, change oil when you're supposed to, grease the driveshaft every so often, and so on.

Get a real-time OBD2 display like a scangaugeII or an ultragauge for your engine load readout.

Keep speed down. I lose about 8 mpg doing 70 mph over 55 mph. Trucks HATE speed. Too much air to move.

Do it right and your truck will reward you. I don't drive like grandma and easily stay between 19 and 21 mpg on this big 6 with its 14/19 EPA rating with my short little 3 mile commute.

I wonder what mileage I'd get on the Prius. My Fit was rated 28/34 and I usually got about 42 mpg.

dacrabramah is right though. Any way you cut it a truck will be thirsty!

My TRD Off Road gets horrible mileage compared to what my PreRunner got. I am assuming it's the tires.

I get 21-22mpg running interstate at 68 mph, 18mpg at 75mph. Those numbers have held true for some time now since I've been running the same route 5 times a week for 4 months!
