Went and saw the Lego movie today. Saw it in 3d. Don't know how much of a difference 3D makes, but I was actually impressed. Thought it was worth it

Took my daughter over the weekend and we all really enjoyed it. Agree it was a great movie and a great message - and totally worth the extra to see it in 3D. And my daughter has been running around the house singing Everything is Awesome ever since! :D

My daughter is selling her Lego Friends Series as she has "outgrown" them... We have the following sets for sale, the prices shown are what we paid vs. their current prices (if different) on Amazon... Been a little dead in here lately, so I though I'd liven things up with a photobomb (you've been warned!) of my family's new project...

The weather here has been keeping us inside so much this winter that TV started to take the place of family conversation and interaction - which I really hate. So we decided to start a Lego project to get us all away from the TV and talking and playing together.

I've been so impressed by the Lego cities that folks on here like HomerTaco and others have built, and my daughter has been pulling me more toward Lego City and away from my Lego Star Wars addiction, so we decided to build our own Lego city. To get an idea for scale, I started laying out what we really wanted to include in our city, all in 10" x 10" squares, while leaving room for growth for future sets, etc. Here's where we started:

    ScreenShot2014-02-10at34222PM_zpsf435001_c5b945e02aefbeebb16d2b3b6357b4d67fae452e.jpg

Rather than building a table for our city from scratch (because I really suck at the games of circular saw and table saw), I decided to repurpose our pool table as the base. We actually play pool about a dozen times a year, so while it still got more use than a dining room table, it wasn't enough to talk me out of using it as our new Lego table:

    IMG_0094_zps00096354_cd785e9c9c8753516a59f94d3769eb9de5f53ecf.jpg

I started by laying down an old sheet on top of the leather cover and then placed rubber shelf liner in strips around the edges to cushion the table from the plywood and MDF I was going to put on top:

    IMG_0100_zpsb225a508_471a10d3e5f6d992891b677e5602ed0ec901ac2d.jpg

    IMG_0103_zpsf7d243ce_b4e501f9c9b17009b99f1ebac39e3a91265bd35c.jpg

I also put down strips of shelf liner and MDF in the middle of the table to reinforce the top before it went on:

    IMG_0104_zps0a8c637d_04e55afee6416a0ebdc3f3496970ef2b812433ff.jpg

Next, I put the table top down. This took the form of 3 sheets of 3/4" plywood cut to 62" x 41" each, resulting in a table that is 62" W x 123" L (6 Lego base plates wide x 12 Lego base plates long, plus a little extra):

    IMG_0108_zpsb6536cf3_5502b1ae0b93775ca26082523ab9c62b0e53d1dc.jpg

Then we put a black tablecloth over the top to make it look pretty. ($10 on Amazon):

    IMG_0112_zps7ea4e02e_75f410ff4537103e58b2f5b54d57a6e3d8fb8706.jpg

In our planning, we decided we wanted a harbor area that had depth to it, so that meant we needed to raise the city up from the water, at least a little. I decided to use 3/4" MDF on top of the tablecloth to give our city elevation and keep the harbor at table ("sea") level. We also knew we wanted a train bridge and a train yard as part of the table, so I cut 3 pieces of MDF to 60" x 32" each for the main area, added two 5" x 20" pieces to provide the gap for the bridge and a 10" x 20" piece for the train yard. Here's a shot with the "water" laid out after the MDF went down:

    IMG_0115_zpsdc374091_d2a974a8bb1103cb50ec868f2b251b5c2283f393.jpg

Next, my daughter and I went on a shopping spree at the Lego store (and wow, was my wife furious!) and put out a few of my daughter's coast guard sets to get an idea of scale for the harbor:

    IMG_0122_zps9984c3ec_a2aa156cfebd328879c04dd72e7a267b2fc35563.jpg

    IMG_0123_zpscc2f78e5_51596383ae22f1d9ab1fd6861df4531ae52f302b.jpg

After seeing the bare edges of the MDF on the table, I knew I wanted something cleaner to add some class to the table, so I built a border wall in Lego Digital Designer to go all the way around the city. For those of you who haven't use this tool before, it's pretty freakin' awesome. After I got the border wall designed, it spit out a bill of materials that I took right to the Pick A Brick store and got the bricks ordered. The bricks are now on their way from Poland, but here's an idea of what it will look like. It will be modular in 10" to 20" sections, connected with technic pins. Dig the way the arches came out too!

    ScreenShot2014-02-10at33153PM_zps8d0acd9_abee1a0f8aaf6a82b5db57963fba3c5365943da3.jpg

And after actually getting some train track pieces in our hands, we knew getting the train layout done next was important, so we could understand how much corner space was going to be taken up for the curves, etc. So, I bought the two trains we wanted (7938, 7939) largely so I could get my hands on the included track, and bought the local Lego store out of the straight/flexible track packs for the rest. We spent Sat and Sun morning laying out the track and then using 1x2 plates and 2x2 tiles to secure the track to the base plates and support it:

    IMG_0126_zps1023295d_a4455bb24dbe90660023463c593af355cfe460fc.jpg

The back left corner has an interesting curve leaving a 10" x 10" area for the haunted house, which we plan to build a small hill under. And this way the house is on the "other side of the tracks" - totally my daughter's idea!

    IMG_0128_zps5a7719b3_56113548f8f99c11e0f57eb26e632b14743712f5.jpg

The small interior track loop is totally off the cuff (doesn't appear on the original plan), so no idea if it will stay long term. Works well for now though. And the train yard is coming along well, but it looks like if we want to keep the crane full width, it will have to sit on the border wall that will go around the town - which may actually look pretty cool.

    IMG_0127_zps65567a24_e29eecb3a178b40dfdc99ea82fc4c7a535bc0ab3.jpg

The bridge is also a work in progress. Just have some basic supports for now:

    IMG_0129_zpsa3b07813_dbe81e177924f12c1cfc96343b459578ad53e785.jpg

If you've made it this far, I hope you enjoyed the pics. This has been about three months of weekends, stopping only to see The Lego Movie twice. Lots more to come as we progress throughout the summer!

I took the family this weekend to see The Lego Movie, it was very enjoyable. I'm going to have to buy that for the kids to watch over and over. I wish I had more space for a lego station. Nice builds, keep it up.

That pool table build is looking good already. I'm jealous.

The fireman posted above must get around. He was in a local Toys R Us near me about 2 yrs ago.
