I showed my son all your shots last night, loves it. I'd buy that Calvin and Hobbes/Starey Night. That Blacktron MF is something else. We actually have a little Blacktron from his mom's old sets. I got it about 90% built once. And she grew up in Omaha!

That's awesome, and glad y'all enjoyed the pics!

Do you remember which Blacktron set? Aways thought they were cool, but the early space themes (Classic Space, Futuron, Blacktron/Space Police I) were just before my time.

Calvin and Hobbes was one of the crowd favorites, it's also not small! (5ftx5ft) Though after seeing it and attending the show, my girlfriend now wants to try making a few mosaics. I'm glad she's excited about Lego, but now I have to share my bricks...

need to learn more about this stuff
I hate being a Debbie downer but the mosaics aren’t that impressive to me.
They take time. They take $$ to get all the dots, but all you have to do is take any online picture and create a pixelated 8bit photo then copy the color of each box with a dot.

Effort yes. Brick building talent. No so much. You don’t even need and creativeness or vision. More a copy paste.

But I hate being that guy. I do like the calvin Hobbes mosaic though!

To an extent, yes, particularly with the sets. Making mosaics with round plates/tiles is about as far as a lot of people go, and many find satisfaction in just that.

On the other end, there are several impressive mosaic builders out there using non-standard techniques. They use different parts/prints/orientations to get different shapes and textures in the final piece. You can also stack transparent parts on top of opaque bricks to achieve colors and gradients not available directly from Lego.

    And then you have lenticulars:

Friends is probably one of the best themes Lego currently has regarding set design/playability

    Thank you, sir!

Makes better sense for her to start by using mine. If she sticks with it then we'll see...

    Thanks, I'll let her know!

I was looking through a recent catalog with my son and I'll admit I said something like those look like they'd be good for playing with. And I can appreciate the sort of real world positive civic socialization they emulate as compared to Ninjago for contrast or yet another mechanical/vehicular wonder.

But those figures freak me the fuck out and always make me think of Barbies.

    I agree.

the set that my 7 year old built by herself that we got at Legoland is very "play friendly", and so are a few other sets that she has that are part of that Friends "line".
