I had a number of hot hatchbacks including a 2009 WRX and then a couple of Golf R's. Those cars are great but they are also a compromise in a lot of ways, at least for me. In the summer they are fun. However RWD, 2 seats and topless (the car...) is better. In the winter, with winter rubber, they work. A truck, again with snow tires, has the advantage of better ground clearance and being able to hold ski gear for the whole family. This was the draw for me to switch.

I picked up an old MX5 last year, I'll be getting a turbo kit which should give it enough scoot to keep up with what I had. This checks the 'other' box for me. If you have one car to 'do it all', I'd be hard pressed to not recommend something with a turbo, AWD and (of course) a manual. If Subaru would have given us another Legacy GT wagon with a manual, I would have considered it over the Taco. Anything in the US and A market with a turbo, AWD, and a manual is just too small for my needs.

I had my STi from 2007-2016. I sold it in early 2016 with the thought of paying off the 2013 and buying something less practical as a toy. Then the 2013 was totaled.

I didn't really miss my STi for the first 2 or so years, but I'm finding myself increasingly missing it over the last few months. That's likely because I'm starting to grow annoyed with the replacement and want something different, sorta.

4cy turbos are like rocket ships compared to these tacos. Have both if you can swing it, best of both worlds. My taco is irreplaceable but the 4cy is necessary for driver experience/sanity

Not many people in them, period. The R line is sick.

That looks exactly like mine I traded in when I bought my taco. Fun car but not really fast imo.

04 wrx jbp sedan - drove it til the ever popular ring land failure. Took me 6 months to find a replacement ej20, that wasn’t a crate motor for $6grand.

got a 12 civic while that was in the shop.

sold the wrx and traded the civic for a 2nd gen TRD OR.

ej20 is a lot of fun, lots of room in the engine bay.

the stupid split rear seat allowed a full 6x6 hole to pass through to the trunk.

fun car, completely useless for anything other than commuting.

I mean the entire line, but yeah. When I got my Rabbit I wouldn’t sit in an R. There were over 30 of them at the dealer I was at. I love them, but I didn’t want to spend 38-40k on an R when I could get a Rabbit for 26k.

Value will plummet because it’s a GTI, but it’s indefinitely more comfortable than a Subaru. AWD would be nice, but I learned how to drive in the snow in a FWD car. People acting like it’s necessary for winter need a driver mod.

Isn’t that sort of like every car ever made?

Ring land failure is a Subaru hallmark. If your subie doesn’t roll off the lot without engine knock and borderline low oil pressure, is it really a subie?

I came from a 2.5i Outback and the Taco is a rocket ship compared to that.

Not the turbos though. Those also broke at the pump oil pick up tube interface. My engine was fine but the MT died a very premature death.

Not sure why anyone trades in their Subaru STi for a Tacoma. I just kept both. 2012 Subaru STi with about $6k in mods, 77k miles, still original motor, no blow by at all. Quality parts, and the proper supporting mods and they last just fine. I probably have more money in the Taco at this point. Although before I bought the Tacoma, the STi was my hunting rig. Nothing like going out and killing a deer, putting it in the back of an STi and showing up at the checkout station with all the guys in their underused small penis trucks.....with no deer.20191031_163225.jpg

The EJ25 and FA20DIT are knocking machines.

The entire line condones oil. My ex had a 2.5 Outback and it was terrible too. I’m sure it’s got issues, but she’s my ex and I no longer gotta worry about that POS.

I ran 5W-40 in mine. Wasn't so nasty, well at least the turbos didn't have the HG problems. Don't get me wrong, I for one was a happy camper to get $20K trade in this year for a 2014 that I paid $29K for. I loved the fun on ice with snows, hated the stock turbo lag but ultimately the weakness was the POS 5 speed manual. GD tranny can't make it 50K miles...wtf?? Never a Subaru again for me.
