Just did my front brakes on my 04 Prerunner. Pads and rotors and ever since then I am getting
excessive brake dust on my rims, About 2 day's after cleaning the rims it's pretty noticeable again. Even worse when I drive in rainy conditions.
I was never a big believer in ceramic pads, but the local parts store told me the vehicle came from the factory with ceramic pads.
Before I did the brakes I could go for maybe 2 weeks before they needed cleaning if not longer.
Don't know if the prior owner used semi-metallic pads or not
Maybe I should have got Wagner pads instead of "Prostop" brand ?
    Any Idea's ?

different material pads will have more or less brake dust. It just comes down to whats important to you. Stopping distance, behavior while heated, dust, longevity, and durability are all variables. To me stopping distance and behavior while heated are the most important and I just clean my wheels. It just apart of todays braking technology bud

Maybe you should have used Genuine Toyota Parts. That's what I have on my front wheels. They get pretty dirty but only after 3-4 months of use.
For brake shoes, drums, and pads one should only use GTP. Don't know about rotors though.

Thanks ya'll. Like I said, not sure what the prior owner used, couldn't see a part number or any toyo logo on the old pads.
When I was an ASE tech, I was told the ceramic are better but hotter on the rotors. Didn't want to warp the new rotors, but I guess ya get what ya pay for !
Be searching down an OEM set here now.

    HAPPY TRAIL'S !!!

Yup, oem or good brand (akebono) ceramics for the win. A lot of the parts store brand pads (duralast, brake best, carquest, etc) put off a ton of redish brown dust.

With all the rain the mud keeps me from seeing any brake dust .

Then only the rain washes anything

Also may want to check and make sure all four pistons are not sticking. I had one piston on both sides that were somewhat stuck and it wore out my pads way to fast and I saw excessive pad dust that was my alarm to figure out what was going on. Might be worth checking out to at least rule that out.

The wagners are very nice. I run them on my 04 pre runner been super happy with them. Never cleaned my rims once
Don’t get the cheap stuff, especially when it comes to brakes

    Everything but the driveshaft. B03A - 410
I bought a car a couple of years ago with Prostop pads on the rear wheels. Lost of dust. Dirty wheels. My standard issue pad for everything in the family is either Wagner Thermo Quiet or Akebono ProAct Ceramic. Both quiet, long-lasting, no/low dust.

I pushed the pistons in when I did the brakes and there was little to no resistance. Got a set of OEM pads coming on the 20th
The rims do not feel any different in temp from side to side after driving, so I am assuming the pistons aren't hanging up and both rims seemed to get the same amount of dust.
I doubt both calipers have any piston issue, but a good thought, maybe I'll run my temp gun on the calipers after driving to see if one runs hotter than the other.

Did you order new shims? OEM pads don't come with included shims to go between the piston and back of pad. Aftermarket pads already have shims glued on but if you install a brand new set of OEMs without those shims you'll get your brakes chattering

I saw that when I ordered the OEM pads. The after market pads came with some hardware parts, can't remember if the shims were glued to the pads or not.
If they are not glued to the pads, I should be able to re-use those shims. I know when I was looking at the removed pads to look and see if toyota was stamped anywhere on the pads, I had to remove the shims and will not be able to re-use those ones. since the glue was so strong the shim removed cannot be re-used b/c they got a bit bent.
Can anyone give me a part number for the OEM hardware kit ?
I may be able to search it up, but it would be info for everyone who's following this thread.

Use different pads but the dust is a good thing.
