Toyota salesman told me to watch for news about a class action lawsuit concerning excessive oil consumption in late model Toyotas including Tacomas.

Anyone else have information to support this or a Toyota contact who can confirm or deny this?

Thought I was through with this issue when I went from '08 Sierra with 5.3L AFM engine to 2015 Tacoma 4.0.

I never check my 08 and never checked my 2000. I don't think there is a problem with Tacoma's. I've head some Honda's and some German cars have bad problems. I haven't bothered to get details since I don't own them but Honda is rebuilding some engines because of rings and the German company says it's normal to use a quart every 500 miles.

Excessive oil consumption is a "major' issue for 2007 - 2009 I4 Camry's and other Toyota's that use the same 2.4L engine. It is not a Tacoma problem. Toyota is currently rebuilding high mileage 2.4 engines from these years under warranty.

I love my new truck but miss my Tacoma
There is something on this for Scions. A guy I work with just had his XB tested and is waiting for the parts to come in. They are putting all new rings in his motor. The test consists of the dealer filling the oil and sealing it then the customer driving it for a week. Customer returns and the dealer checks the level, if it's more than 1 quart low it fails. The guy at my work was over 2 quarts low.
I've never heard of this on a Tacoma though and whenever I check mine it's always been good. I never lose any oil.

Mine after 5k miles is right at or darn close to where I fill up to. I am at 75k miles now. Racking em up quick. One change I missed it till 7500 because I was busy, and it was fine. Oil was still nice looking(even though that doesn't mean a lot)

Actually the test is they seal everything up and you drive it for a 1,000 miles and then recheck the oil.

This is the test the Salesman described. He said Toyota's position that using 1 quart in 1200 miles was reasonable. He disagreed and said no oil should be needed between 5000 mile oil changes.

I would be freaking livid if my 2015 started doing this. Just had my first 5000 mile service done and will watch my oil level.

Did review paperwork after leaving dealership and noticed the tech used 5w/20 instead of the specified 5W/30 on my oil change came back next day and 50 miles later and they replaced with correct oil. Glad I had read owners manual and recognized that they used oil specified for 4 cyl. Instead of V6.

I think you are likely correct but why would Toyota specify different viscosity for the four cyl. Than the V6 if it does not matter?

My 13 doesn't burn any oil and I check it once a week. It always checks out to be good.

I use zero oil in between 5K oil changes in all of my Toyota's. According to Toyota math, it would be reasonable to use 4 qts. or a gallon of oil in between a 5K oil change. I do believe Toyota's position is ridiculous. That's a lot of oil getting past something.

Toyota uses the 1GRFE engine so this lawsuit doesn't affect us.

One of my in-laws owns one of these - 2007 Camry 4 cyl. I maintain it. 47K and no oil usage. Fingers crossed.

This isn't just toyota, Subaru has had the same issue. My wife's 13 forester just had the lower block replaced under warranty because of oil consumption. Subaru must trust its customers more because they don't seal anything up, just ask you to come back in 1200 miles for the test.

So I guess BMW is the German company. It doesn't affect my Taco or my wife's Honda either.

A few visits back, I asked the Service Advisor if there were any issues with the new corollas(my wife has one) and he said there wasn't. But he did mention something about older toyota vehicles with high oil consumption that Toyota Corp will be eating the cost on replacing their engines. From what I remember he mentioned corolla, scion tc/xb, camry and rav4's. Which ever engine covers most/all of those vehicles is the issue. And if you paid out of pocket for your engine to be replaced on the affected vehicles, Toyota Corp. would reimburse you.

We all know how Warranty/TSB issues work... You have to work for the issue/s to get resolved, they usually don't just give the no cost to you fix off the bat.

If I came across one of the affected vehicles, I would buy it to get the new warrantied engine from Toyota at no cost!

You made a good choice on the Tacoma. I came from an 08 Chevy with the AFM 6.0(Vortec Max), it not only consumed oil and ticked(which the dealer told me was normal while under warranty) but a month out of warranty one of the AFM lifters shit the bed and took the lobe on the cam out with it. The dealer wouldn't do anything. GM Corporate told me tough luck since I wasn't the original owner. A $3000 screw you from GM. Never again will I own a GM vehicle.
