Neither the 2011 V6 i had or the 2013 V6 I currently have ever lost oil. I currently have just under 40k miles on my 13. I check the oil every now and again, and it's always right where it was previously. This motor has been around for 10 years with no complaints about oil consumption on a large scale. We would have heard of this by now.

My owners manual says max (acceptable) oil usage is 1.0 liters per 1000 km (600 miles).
I would not be happy if mine used anywhere near this amount !
Mine doesn't use a drop - I check it weekly.

I'm a foreman/tech at a Lexus dealer. Unfortunately, oil consumption seems to be an issue with some 3.5 direct injected engines. I honestly didn't want to take a chance that I would be affected with the issue in the future. I'm happy with the choice that I made to buy a '15. If I had a '16, I would be sure to monitor oil usage between changes to track consumption. The 3.5 had valve spring recalls and VVTI gear recalls in the past. I've had too many disassembled and am probably a little jaded... I also preferred the styling of the '15. Again, not trying to fan the flames, but just my $.02.

Certainly can't go wrong with the proven reliability of the 4.0 V6. I think that was my biggest dissapointment with the new tacoma is the 3.5.

I have a 2016 Tacoma with 35600 miles on it. I have synthetic oil in it since new. I have taken it to the dealer since purchasing it new. I have not made a oil change (every 10,000 miles) yet without adding oil. No smoke, exhaust is clean and no leaks. I have had the Toyota specialist look at it and tell me that it is in specks. 1 Qt./1000 miles is the worst and I told them that is crap. Dealer stands with Toyota and keeps saying it is in speck. Glad I'm not driving it across the country, I would need a case of oil to get there and back. Fill up the oil and check the gas.

    Nice first post, welcome.
If you still have warranty just run it dry, let the engine seize and then those dickheads who say that's normal get to pay for a brand new one for ya!

This was as issue with an Acura TSX the ex and I had. It drank oil so quick occasionally the oil light would come on. There were times I would check the dip stick and it would be dry. lol That’s when I decided it was time to get rid of it. It was normal though for some Honda/Acura vehicles to consume that much. Seems ridiculous.

We just bought a 2018 Honda CRV with the 1.5L turbo. This engine has the reverse effect. The oil level has a tendency to rise vs consume oil. These engines are notorious for fuel dilution issues. No word yet what Honda is going to do. I may keep the oci short.

It rises a noticable amount? That is a quick death for a motor, it will wash the oil off the cylinder walls and bearing surfaces.

I have the same experience and I run my hard towing (3rd gear at 4K+ going up hills)...no oil consumption.

Same here, mine has never burned a drop. I refill the jugs with the old oil and it's right to the same level everytime.

I haven't heard of any widespread issue regarding oil consumption in Tacomas. My Tacoma 2.7 hasn't consumed 1qt in the last 50,000 miles (based on dipstick readings). The oil level is always the same, I don't know why I bother checking it :D

It is true about some of the GM 5.3L engines having excess oil consumption -- the piston rings were designed as "low-tension" in order to reduce the engine's internal friction. These low-tension piston rings allowed more oil into the cylinder, resulting in oil consumption. My boss has a 5.3 in his Sierra, it drinks oil, and the dealer told him it's normal to consume 1 qt every 1,000 miles. Needless to say, he is not happy about it but he's not going to do anything about it either, aside from topping it off every couple fill-ups. All I can say is that some designs are better than others. It doesn't mean the whole truck is garbage, it's just a little more high-maintenance than GM intended, LOL.

My 13 is the same. I’m a little over 76k miles and it’s always topped off on the dip stick at oil change.

It’s got just under 1000 miles. Last week I checked the oil to get a reference. We’re taking a 700 mile trip in a few weeks. Then check again. Luckily we have a 100K warranty.

My 06 4.0 will use 1qt every 1k to 1200 miles depending how I drive. No leaks, bone dry on the out side. No smoke. Not at start up or when romping on the accelerator pedal.

That’s certainly not normal for the 4.0. If it isn’t leaking, then the only other thing it could be is burning up. Probably worn rings. It doesn’t have to noticeably smoke to be burning oil. Do a compression test and that will give you a pretty definitive answer. When we had the TSX, that burnt oil at a crazy pace and never once saw any smoke come out the exhaust pipe.

That is a bummer. Personally I would spend the $30 and send a oil sample to Blackstone. And then continue to do it every 1k and see what changes, at least for a while.

It’s a known issue with fuel dilution. It would be one thing if it had a large oil sump. The sump only holds 3.7 qrts with filter.
