Hi everyone, I have a set of Procomp 69 series 16 x 8 wheels going on my 97 four-wheel-drive Taco. For the life of me I could not find 16x7s for this truck, and the tire I really want is a 235/85R 16.
I called four wheel parts and asked the specific question, and he said it would be no problem being the tire is 9.3 inches wide.
If anyone is running this size tire on this size wheel could y’all provide pics and feedback please? Toyo AT3’s are the tires I’m looking at. Thanks!

It's going to look stretched and as a thin tire might look silly.
On a 16x7 it is borderline stretched.

I would go with a wider tire or change your wheel. If you're buying tires from a chain shop they're probably going to refuse to mount the tires on 8" wide wheels FWIW

I have 235/85s on my 16x6 trailer wheels and they seem just right

    255/85/16 is a great alternative.

No drawbacks aside from being slightly taller; I'd say that's a good thing.

Awesome thanks for the responses you all. I would love love love to go with a 255/85R 16 I’m just not for certain they would clear everything with stock lift? I agree with 235 looking ridiculous on a 16 X8, I have 255/85r16s on my 1992 first gen 12 valve mounted on 16x7s and they are bulged ever so slightly. I see now even a 255 would be borderline-ish, and 235 would be too thin.
Other than Toyo M 55s, do y’all have knowledge of other tires available in 255/85? Thanks again!

235/85/16 are 32"...give or take depending on the tire manufacturer.

255/85/16 are 33"...give or take as well.

I ran 235/85/16 (minor lift) on stock wheels. Looked great, aired down great.

On my access cab, I thought they were too skinny, aesthetically speaking.

    Went 255/85/16 on the 4Runner.

I expect you to rub with a 32" tire, so expect to do the pinch weld mod. Would expect much more rubbing with a 33" tire.

If you did consider the larger of the two, Cooper makes a great A/T and M/T tire in that size, as well as Toyo (think they have 2-3 variants).

In the wheels/tires section there is a skinny tire thread that lists all of the 255/85 options out there, the thread is hundreds of pages long at this point!

And just for the heck of it, a photo dump of my tires all on stock wheels.

235/85/16 (Falken Wildpeak AT3W) wheels on my old Tacoma (white one)

Same tires next to 255/85/16 (Cooper ST Maxx) to show the difference in width and height -

And the same 255/85/16 above next to another 255/85/16 (Toyo MT) of a different make -

Ya this is good ^^^. The Toyo MT is 33.5 tall making them the tallest 255’s. The Cooper ST Maxx is 32.8, the shortest of the 255’s. Having had more than one set of both of these I recommended them both! But for the OP I suggest the Coopers just because they’re closer in height to the 235’s.

If your rims happened to be 17’s I would be recommending Falken AT3W’s! On my third set now and will pick up another set of them in the same 255/17’s in the spring. They’ve been the best for my use so far. However the Toyo MT clearly look the moat awesome!

Yeah I was surprised at how freaking tall the Toyo was.

I got it as a spare since I couldn't find a Cooper anywhere.

    The thing is massive -

Wow response time is awesome from y’all! Other forums I’m used to waiting 1-3 days to here anything. So if I keep these wheels I’m looking at 255/85s and trim/ lift accordingly.
Great point about the stock alloy wheels on later 1st gens, mine are 15x7 steels. I’m not opposed to trading these 16x8s for some 16x7s, being able to run the tires I want is more important to me than the pretty pro comps. I’m also leaning this way after seeing the price of most 255s vs 235s Thoughts?

What can I say, we all like the sounds of our own voices. :D

It sounds like you're starting an arms race here, lol. Get rims, "need" bigger tires, then need a lift and trim to fit them. Well now you need a locker, or two. Now throw in a roll cage for good measure. 40s and tons are next...

This is why we have this emoji:
    :spending:
    lol

That's not to say that your truck will explode if you put the 235's or 255's on the 8" rims, it won't. It's just a matter of if you're going to do it, might as well plan it out and do it right. Once. So far it sounds like you've got the right priorities. Get your tires situated first because that's the ONLY thing that actually touches the ground (ideally, lol).

If 255/85's don't make sense for you, don't get them because that's what would fit your rims better. Sell the 8's and find some used 16x7's (you can generally find those pretty readily because everyone and their mother do wheels/tires as their first mod). Just be aware that the wheels from the newer generation of Tacomas aren't the same backspacing, which may cause issues.

Go searching around in the tire/wheel forum too. Do a search for the tire you have/want, and you'll likely fun 100 different people who have done the same and list their specs. You'll be able to get an idea of what people needed to do to get that tire to "fit". The 255/85's are known for being the 33" that needs the least amount of work to fit. Generally a 2" or so suspension lift with maybe some minor hammering of the pinch weld is usually all that 's needed. Some people don't hammer at all.

And technically, you don't "need" a lift to get ANY tire to fit. Just that less lift = more trimming. There are folks who stuffed 35's with stock suspension height (and a shit ton of cutting). It also depends on WHERE the tire rubs. My tires rubbed the frame, and a lift didn't really change that (still rubbed, just a little less).

Anyhoo, sorry, I tend to ramble.

Yeah I might run 255/85 next. I'm running 275/65 (33x11.5) and rub on the end of the tire to my hammer smashed pinch welds. I love the stance though, I have some poke out of the factory fender flare.

Thanks jbrandt, you’re right about wanting to mod left and right, it’s just that for me that means injectors studs and turbo for my 6bt. I like power mods, suspension/ wheels/ tires meh.
Maybe that’s why I ordered the wrong wheels…..my brain is overly saturated with horsepower:/
I agree, I think I’ll look for used 16x7s from tacos & 3rd gen 4runners. Excuse my ignorance, but is there a buy/sell function of this forum? For someone whos 24 I’m technologically slow

I just found the buy/ sell/ trade and someone has a set of OEM alloys for sale. I tried to respond for an offer but it said I don’t have enough posts yet. Those wheels are what I’m looking for

Ok that’s good to know! Yep the 16x7 enkei’s (I think that’s right?) would be nice, but really the regular OEM alloys would be fine.
