Hey guys, looking to get a throaty louder exhaust for my truck, without being over the top. I think i’m gonna chop the 2nd set of cats and run 2.5 duals to a black widow muffler and 4 inch tips. I have the 4.0 and have been seeing it done on the 3.5s a lot and really like it. What do y’all think?

IMHO, a louder exhaust on any stock Tacoma that is not supercharged is over the top. Could run into issues with smog testing.

I think that no matter what exhaust you put on these trucks they still sound like a tractor.

I run a Borla type s on my 3rd gen and love it. Not obnoxious at all but gives the truck some grunt.

I had a magnaflow muffler and it was plenty of noise, a little rumble at idle, and you can hear the engine when you want, no real crazy whine or drone. However, you are driving a toyota tacoma. What do you gain from adding more noise to what I assume is your daily driver?

Duals on a v6 sound weird to me. I like the look but not the sound. I got a Magnaflow muffler on mine that sounds decent.

I run the TRD and it provides just enough grumble for my liking, while not sounding like someone whose ego is relative to the sound of their truck. I’m sure my neighbors appreciate it as well. When driving at low speeds there is a bit of the throaty sound you mentioned and when I get on it, I think it sounds great (for what it is, a catback on a V6). I always appreciate the subtle feedback the exhaust provides, which is why I went TRD to begin with, something for me to enjoy and not everyone within earshot. I also have an AFE intake and the combination of the two is just right IMO.
