Finally had a reputable mechanic run tests on my truck. Everything came back in spec and nothing seems out of the ordinary. He drove for awhile and told me he couldnt get the manifold to glow. I drove my truck a ways and back and sure as hell my exhaust manifold is still glowing red. I can only see it at night, but it's definitely glowing. What we have already checked or replaced:

    Upstream o2
    Replaced manifold
    Fixed exhaust leaks
    Checked cat (not clogged)
    Checked timing (perfect)
Checks fuel trims (read at 9 on highway, 0-2 in city)
    Ran an entire systems check

Temp in manifold at idle is 600-700 degrees

Could the computer be bad? Should I have my fuel injectors changed? I'm just lost.

I'm about to trade this thing in or sell it. I've already wasted enough money chasing this stupid issue.

Ill say this, but you prolly already know.......

1.) Clogged Cat, but you said it is not
    2.) Bad MAF?
3.) running way too rich (you said you had it checked)
4.) cracked or busted exhaust valve. (you should hear it.)

have you cleaned the throttle body?

I have not cleaned the throttle body. The MAF sensor is good. The truck seems to be running rich. I know I'm using a lot of fuel.

The truck actually runs very well. Responds to gas well, no restrictions and I can drive it as fast as I want to with no problems. Just worried about that manifold getting so hot. I'm so surprised no one else has had this issue.

You replaced the manifold, did you use a OEM part or something aftermarket?

The manifold I just put on is OEM. Got it from autozone to replace the cracked manifold that was on it

Do you have a picture of this happening? Not doubting Id just like to see

Could be fuel related, could also be possibly the manifold that was installed is flawed ie different alloy might respond to heat differently

No pictures. It would be hard to take a picture of this since I can only see it glowing at night and I doubt it would show up well on a picture.

It has an even glow across the entire EM. The old manifold that was cracked is black in all 4 cylinders. I assume my truck is running rich...the question is WHY? And why is it so hard to pinpoint the issue....

This truck also has 216k on it.

Are we talkin' "cherry" or just a little glow?

exhaust gets hot, they will glow a little after driving around.

black is carbon deposits, result of combustion, normal unless you have a 1/4"-1/2" of layer

take the picture anyway and turn off your flash. without this info there truly seems to be nothing major :notsure:

just replace the cat, its not like a HUGE dollar item, replace the cat and that will solve the problem.

as I mentioned to you in the other thread, if its restricted it can "look" open (you can see through it) and not throw any codes (because it does still have exhaust flowing) but it will make your manifold overheat because exhaust isn't flowing freely and fast enough to carry the heat away from the engine.

change the cat and problem is solved

Not sure how to describe "cherry" over any other glow. I just know its glowing and it's red and doesn't look normal at all.

I'm wondering if I should straight pipe it and drive it around for a night and see if the manifold will still glow. Then I'll know it's the cat.

Yes it's only the manifold that is glowing. I called autozone just awhile ago and asked them if the manifold I bought was the OEM part for my truck and they said it was the "OE" part with gaskets and everything. It fit right on with no problems.

I put a lot of highway miles on this truck but I don't drive it hard at all. I baby it. I'm a very defensive driver.

Hope y'all can see that picture. If this is what "cherry" red looks like, then no...my truck isn't doing that. It's only so red that you can see it at night. I would assume 700-900 degrees. How hot should a manifold get when normal?

maybe the manifold is just a cheap crap way too thin cast iron and it cant hold the heat so it gets too hot and glows.

the best replacement manifold for our trucks is this stock header found on any 2.7L 3rz 2002 and newer trucks and is a perfect exact fit replacement for any 2.4L or 2.7L trucks from 1995-2004:

    http://s1076.photobucket.com/user/keakar63/media/3rzexhaustmanifold.jpg.html?sort=6&o=3

they can be found in any salvage yard for around $50 or even bought brand new for around $150 and are heavy gage steel tubing that is better then those cheap aftermarket headers that are not dot legal.

you should find you one of these and swap out that crappy cheap cast iron manifold you bought and you will know for sure the manifold isn't the issue because if your cat is restricted then it WILL ruin your engine to keep driving it that way. its like you trying to breathe through a straw, you can do it for a while but sooner or later you will pass out and die.

OE is a different vendor cloning a stock part. No performance gains, just a cheaper made part. Typically this is ok for most parts.

OEM is made by Toyota, or the auto manufacture, and its a lot better quality than what you'll get from vato-zone.

I'll bet money you have 2 things going on.

    1. A clogged, or partial clogged cat
    2. A cheap exhaust manifold made of cheap materials.

I'm still leaning towards the fact that its just a cheap manifold made from cheap materials and that's why it's getting red. Personally if it were me I'd take it back and get a real Toyota made manifold.

I was under the impression that the chain parts houses don't carry anything OEM. Is that not the case? I always assumed all of their parts are aftermarket and OE replacements.

You are correct, they do not carry OEM, only OE parts. I posted the part he installed from Autozone.com.
