I just did my suspension lift yesterday, and I have some interaction between the leaf springs and the exhaust pipe. I used the OME exhaust bracket and that didn't help when the Toytec shackles were at the 2" setting. Currently I have the shackles at the 1.5" setting, and still getting some interaction between the tail pipe and the leaf. I've looked around on line and seen many people just cut their exhaust after the down turn. However before I do something that I regret, (and can't undo) are there any problems with chopping the pipe at the first downturn behind the rear axel? Anyone have a better solution?

the main reason for the exhaust to, well, exhaust the fumes away from the vehicle. exiting on the side allows the gases to float off into the atmosphere and not gather under the truck. If you are moving this is a non-issue but if you do a lot of stop-and-go it could add extra heat underneath.

all-in-all it's probably not going to have any ill affect.

I just installed an aux fuel tank in the spare tire location. The exhaust was in the way so I chopped it off just after the muffler and added a down turn.

Biggest problem with cutting it off at the axle is you will blow dust up everywhere with it pointing at the ground.

Chopping it right past the axel is common. No worries.

Thanks for the input... I did it. Grabbed the ol sawzall, and cut er' short. After getting that pesky tail pipe out of the way I was able to get the full length out of the shackles. I'm pretty happy with the results, got my lift in, and my big tires on. The truck is starting to come together! I'll get some pics of the final product soon!

I bet you could bring it to the muffler shop and have a new pipe that clears put on it for less then $50.

in slow traffic and heavy fog or rain you could be breathing carbon monoxide coming from under the truck if it isn't directed out from under the truck, just sayin. in bumper to bumper traffic you would get nautious from it with the windows down

That was a concern, (the CO poisoning) my best solution for that is to stay in the mountains where we don't have bumper to bumper traffic. That said I'll need to replace the exhaust sooner than later, The muffler is kinda haggard. When that time comes I'll look into some custom rerouting.

That's a good point, here are my thoughts. The down turned exaust tip is about 20 inches off the ground. Further more while traveling dirt roads for any extended period of time dust is going to get everywhere. It's best to accept things will be dusty and continue having fun. I've yet to hear about or see this being an issue.

Regarding CO collecting under the truck and working it's way into the cab. Have you guys seen the amount of space under the truck? The exhaust has plenty of room to dissipate. Also if you're in bumper to bumper traffic There's bound to be an exhaust pipe closer to your lunges than the one on your truck....you're kinda surrounded by them.

I will say that if you drive with the bed off, chopped exhaust and rear window open you will get exhaust in the cab.

Its not the overall gathering that's generally the issue, its the ability to then leak into and concentrate in the cab. Same reason people die every year.

Is there any evidence to support this fearmongering? Thousands of people have made the mod, including myself, and there have been exactly zero reported injuries or death that I know of. If you have contrary facts please share.
