I'm in the market for one too. I'm not used to the best exhaust for a Tacoma because I drove a chevy street truck for year. Here's the thing...I put a dual cat back exhaust system from Gibson on that truck. It was a V-6 4.3 L engine. It sounded like a big block 350 when I cranked it up after I got it on. It was awesome. I know Flowmaster and other exhaust are more popular but Gibson has a great sound. I'm wondering if it'll do the same for my taco. Only problem is, they don't make duals for it!!! Anyway, just a long thought there for my experience w/ Gibson.

gibson is a great company and they use quality supplies but my only problem with any catback is the price. the super 44 is just the muffler with resonator delete using all stock piping. but if you want dual exhaust you would stilll be better off just buying the muffler and having a shop fab you up a custom exhaust. it usually comes out to about 200 bucks cheaper than full catbacks. the companies usually charge more because it comes ready to bolt on and because of shipping costs, exhaust systems are heavy and oddly shaped and always pricey to send through fedex or ups.

Obviously, besides price. What are some of the main differences between catback and just getting a muffler, in terms of sound, performance, hp gain, etc.?

I like the catbacks because it is a complete system. But this guy is right, it does increase the price. As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. Right now though, Gibson only has a single side exit cat back system availabe for '09 and up Tacoma's. They don't have duals. Duals would cost more in any system. With these systems you get the muffler, tips, and all too.

On the other hand, Gibson is much more inexpensive than the others if you didn't get a muffler only and fabbed up some duals. Compared to Magnaflow and Borla (don't know about Flowmaster) the stainless steal catback single side exit exhaust system is about $450 w/o shipping. The others are in the $600 range w/o shipping. I can't speak on muffler only with a fab job because I've never had it done. All I know is, that Gibson I had, sound and quality is almost enough for me to buy it again. And it's relatively inexpensive compared to the other after market systems.

Oh, and with my chevy...I did see some hp gains. I raced it against other SS chevy pickups, extremes, etc. Beat 'em everytime. Don't know really how much gain it was but I know I had a catback exhaust system and they didn't and it was faster no doubt. Sound, like I said...best I've heard. Deep, throaty sound. Like I said though, that was with duals. Gibson doesn't make a dual exhaust for Tacoma.

The Gibson exhaust was already installed when I bought the truck and I get a lot of compliments on the sound. It sounds pretty throaty.

I believe it is a catback system and runs around $600-$650
