Hey everybody had a problem with my 08 other day with not cranking over. Lil back story im from Arkansas and currently working in Chicago where temp dropped to -2, and night before i was in truck idling for a good two hrs. Turns out muffler froze solid. So $200 later ( not complaining) was wondering if they always puke water like this and if so would a different exhaust help? Thinking of a cheap solution of strait pipe or maybe glass pack but idk about how it will effect computer or just how annoying sound will actually be. Any help is appreciated

I find that very hard to believe that water built up in hot exhaust (pretty sure it has a weep hole to drain water aswell) and 100% blocked exhaust off. Even if exhaust was blocked off it would still fire up until the pressure built up. And why did it cost $200 to fix if all you had to do was thaw it out.

I have no idea what's going on. I think this is in the wrong forum....

I also don't understand how the muffler froze solid. Wait, what's the question?

well after three days of it barely starting and when it did was like it was running on 4 cylinders plus check engine light flashing i had it towed $75 to a mechanic that charged me $120 for comp diagnosis and to drill a hole in my muffler. If i would have known that the muffler was frozen solid i prolly wouldnt have gone that far dick

I find it hard to believe you're exhaust would ever produce enough H2O to "fill" the muffler to have it frozen over. the heat from the exhaust gases would help evaporate the water in the exhaust tubing.

sounds like there is something else wrong with the truck.

and welcome to the 1st Gen (95-04) forums. you may want to saddle up to the 2nd Gen (05-15)

So how did they thaw it out finally? I think the moisture in the air in my tires was starting to freeze just like your muffler so I think I'll go drill a couple holes so they can drain properly.

Sorry to poke fun OP but something just doesn't sound right there.

Ive been tinkering with cars for 20 years, dad has been a mechanic for 40, it gets omg cold and nasty here. Ive never heard of a muffler "filling with water". Unless you parked on the beach at low tide and left. It would take gallons of water to fill an exhaust system, it's a flat laying tube unless you have it mounted vertically, so water just flows out. And the amount of water vapor in exhaust probably wouldnt even measure as an ounce. The water you see dripping out on a cold day is just water vapor that condenses on cold pipes. Once the pipes are warm it doesn't even condense.

And if the muffler is full of ice, how would drilling a hole help? Ice doesnt drain.

Look i dont know why or how but it was 60 yesterday and dropped to mid 40's at night. I sat after work in my truck idling and there was water from the hole that ran a good 10 ft from under truck and a puddle still from tail pipe. Day after it happened there was a pile of ice 2" high and about a foot diameter under tail pipe so idk just wondered if it has happened before and if a different muffler might help thats all

So what really happened was you probably had some green fuzz growing on the battery terminals. The mechanic cleaned the battery posts and charged you an hour of labor for a 10 minute job and gave you a bogus excuse. Does the muffler look new?

Gasoline is a hydrocarbon - the molecules contain hydrogen and carbon. When burned, they produce carbon dioxide and water. They are both gases when formed in the engine, but when the water vapour comes into contact with the cold exhaust pipe, it condenses, so you will see liquid water dripping out. After the car has run for a while, the exhaust pipe heats up to the point where the water vapour no longer condenses and the dripping stops. By the way, it isn't plain water... some of that carbon dioxide will become dissolved in the water to form a dilute carbonic acid. Been doing any mudding (clogged muffler drain holes)? Do you have a working catalytic converter that heats up the exhaust system and burns off the exhaust gasses? Excuse me now, I need to go soak my head in a bucket of ice!
