I'm the second owner of my 2019. I've owned it since 8/2021 and have noticed little things/mods the previous owner had done and suspect it had a "back to stock" sale.

I bought it with ~8k miles and currently it sits just shy of 36k miles. I occasionally get some detonation around 2k rpm in second and third gear, when under a slight load - whether on an incline or with weight. It's fairly easy for me to replicate. On a couple occasions, I've run the tank nearly dry before filling with 93 octane. I can't get it to do it on 93. So that being said, I'm curious if it has a tune with more timing.

Anyone have any suggestions for how can I find out if it's been tuned? Unfortunately I'm not too familiar or experienced with tuning. If it doesn't have a tune, I'm wondering if it'd be worth it to take it to the dealer while under warranty.

I appreciate any input out there.

The manual addresses knock while on an incline. Regardless, there's no "sure" way for us to tell it has been tuned. There's a chance it was prior to VIN crediting requirements, there's a chance it has the EROM patch, and there's a chance the aftermarket tune has edits we could identify (ACIS, fuel cut, etc).

We have some tools and can determine if it's stock or 'something else'. If it's not properly VIN registered it's certainly old, tuned or not. Registration has been a proper license requirement for quite some time, and the tunes have advanced so much since in that time, I would recommend treating it as it is was never properly tuned. We certainly have current tunes that should not have this behavior.

Thanks for all the input so far!

Interesting....It didn't have a manual in the glovebox when I bought it. Maybe I should read up on the Toyota app.

Are you saying that a tune with advanced timing wouldn't cause detonation when running on lower octane fuel? If the explanation is that it's tuned for 93 octane, then so be it. If it hasn't been tuned, I'm not sure it should have detonation as frequently or easily as it does, so it'd be worth taking to the dealer while it's under warranty. Since our trucks are made to run on 87, seems unreasonable that a stock truck just requires 93 to not have detonation.

    CVN?

Calibration Verification Number. It's in essence a check-sum. If the tune is stock, the CVN for your calibration ID number will be identifiable. If your CVN is different than the "stock" CVN, you can be sure something in your calibration has been changed and your vehicle is likely tuned.

Gotcha. Thanks for elaborating. Any way a technological peasant, like myself, can figure this out with a laptop? Or does it require someone with tuning software? I'm mechanically inclined, but don't have tuning experience.

    Most welcome!

Some handheld code readers/scanners can report the Cal ID and CVN. Perhaps your local AutoZone or similar who does the free "code reading" would be willing to do a look-see.

You definitely do not need to have tuning software/laptop to get that info.

Awesome. What should a stock CVN be?

Depends on which Cal ID you have. There are three Cal ID's for your ECU assuming your profile is correct ('19 Manual). 04B40, 04B41, and 04B42. Each version will have a unique CVN.

Checking the CVN can tell you if it's tuned, but a matching CVN doesn't mean you aren't tuned. You can't compress 1.5 or 2MB into a handful of numbers and expect every change to not create overlaps of the same values. If anyone is interested in learning more, search hash collisions on Google.
